Ariel,
I use Protools Le 6.0.1 on OSX 10.2.6 on an 800mgz G3 iBook with an mBox. I can get 24+ tracks out of my system. I recommend getting as much ram as possible (I ordered my iBook maxed out with 640mb.) I do have occasional program quits after my iBook goes into "sleep" mode, a reboot always corrects it.

Hope this helps,

-Kevin

I have an iBook 700 sitting right in front of me. If you want digital static, no output, and like constantly repatching usb plugs - this may be the system for you. Have repeated the scenario with 3 different mBox units - all brand new with the latest firmware. Have spent the last 5 hours setting up the iBook ( over and over ) as per the Digi PT 6 setup instructions. Don't worry, I've also seen this problem on three other iBooks. Sounds like fun huh?
What do I have to do to get a response over this?????

iBook 700, also iBook 600
mBox ( 3 different units ) latest firmware
OSX 10.2.4, tried 10.2.5
512 Mb Ram
all settings as per the first Topic in this forum

It's just as well that these iBooks boot into OS9

Use an ibook 700MHz G3. Get 24+ tracks out of it. Stable as a rock. For anyone having trouble: upgrade to 10.2.6 and 6.0.1 NOW.

There are VERY minor annoyances:
1) Do not put your laptop to sleep with PT running. This is a bigger issue with a laptop than a desktop. It will crash it. DUH!

2) After I start my ibook, I have to unplug/plug-in my mbox to reset the hardware before I start PT.

After that, it's ROCK SOLID. If I could get the plug-in count out of it that I do my 001 system, I would use it exclusively.

Oh yeah. Do yourself a favor and throw away OS 9 on this system. I found it to be buggy and crash-prone.

"Stable as a rock" is not the correct way to describe an audio system that requires hot swapping the USB connector after every restart of the computer. "Flakey" is a far more descriptive term. "Intermittent" is another adjective that comes to mind.
Oh, and by the way - have set up scores of different Pro Tools systems under OS9 - they run like a dream. No bugs, very few crashes. We run some of these rigs 12 hours a day, and actually get to record and mix music on them.

Ohh, look what we just found in the Pro tools 5.2.1 manual that isn't in the 5.2 manual - "... with your computer on, connect the USB cable to your computer."

I guess that solves it. It's now a feature.
Excellent.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I stand by my stability statements. I don't think that having to wait till the computer is on to plug in the mbox makes it unusable.

Remember, this isn't about OS 9 vs. OS X anymore. For newer macs, OS 9 isn't even included, and soon won't even be supported. I believe we're giving advice to people purchasing NEW macs, so comments about OS 9 serve no purpose. . . the only reason I even mentioned it was mine came with OS 9 and never worked right till OS X came out. On my system, an ibook, it just was never stable. But it's not even an issue anymore (thank god.)

I run 5.2 on a 700 ibook w/an mbox and 9.2. (also an 001 on an G4867) It blows my mind that some folkes find that reaching 3 inches, moving that HUGE usb plug in and out is way too much hassle. I'd hate to see them trying to allign a 2" tape machine or re-solder an old consoles preamps.

I will probably be one of the last to switch to X and PT6.0 since everything works so well and I can work so quickly right now.
