For the forseeable future, it looks like each new version of Protools will also have a sub-license for the previous version.

What makes you think so?

Upgrades are and have been different thing, but this is the first time you get licenses for two different PT versions. PT10 is a bridge release which includes some of the goodies from the brave new world, and is included with PT11 licenses for those who still must rely on something that is not working in PT11.

I believe new PT12 purchases will bring things back to status quo, as in only giving you PT12 license.

It's not the first time at all. PT10 included PT9 in the same fashion, even though there was no dual boot option. They just did it as a convenience.

Since they've done it twice in a row it seems to be the new normal. Since it's a sub-license that can't be split and sold, there's no negative consequence for them not to do it.

Really? Then I stand corrected. I upgraded my PT8HD to PT9HD so having a bundle of three licenses was what I expected. But I didn't know PT10 also came with PT9.

But as you said, they maybe just did it as a convenience. This is a major transition happening right now. Just as major as going from PT5 to PT6 (Classic Mac OS to OSX). Things calm down eventually, and nobody can predict the future.

Oh? PT10 included PT9? I thought one surrendered their PT9 asset when they upgraded to PT10 (unless they purchased a separate license asset). When I got PT10 as part of my 11R bundle PT9 wasn't included.

Here is a screen capture from my Ilok license manager:

Ilok capture.jpg

I remember there being a lot of discussion that people got licenses for 9 when they upgraded to 10.

In my case, I did the special offer of buying the support plan which included the free upgrade (that they offered because of the complaint about HD10 pricing). I don't know if that's any different from anything else. My Avid account simply lists it as an upgrade.

I will try to find past threads that discussed this.
