Default Using artist control vs artist mix vs 3rd party

Hello everyone! I’m grand new to the forum and look forward to being apart of the community!!

I have a bit of a multipart question. I’m new to producing but not new to music. I’ve recently decided I wanted to pursue producing/making/mixing music more seriously (I come from a performance career). I’ve been building my studio up slowly. Currently using Mac M1 14 Sonoma, UA Apollo twin, ADAT with Scarlett 18i20, Arc studio 4, Yamaha HS5 monitors, NI S88 mkiii keyboard, and a
Variety of mics. I figured my next step would be to get a DAW controller of some kind because I think it would make me
Feel more connected to in the box mixing. If there is any other step/places to build first I would love any direction or suggestions!

I heard 3rd party controllers do not work so well/are buggy because of the HUI protocol and not EUCON. I was looking at things like icon pro audio platform nano, presonus masterport, SSL uf1. I would love an avid S1 or something similar but that is a little out of my price range at the moment. Recently I’ve been looking at reverb and other second hand sellers for an artis mix and artist control (could anyone touch on why one would be better than the other to start with??)

Hi n_vegas!
Welcome to the duc!
Presonus has some pretty decent HUI Controllers at a lower price range.
But I'm personally using the S1 with an iPad an I have not gotten ito any troubles so far. Got this for 3 years now

Hi thank you!!

I would love to get an S1! I think over 1k for a controller is a little above my budget right now. I wanted to stay with avid but I worry the artist mix/control is not supported anymore, firmware updates, Ethernet cable when I don’t have a port for it and quality of them being used after a decade +. I heard people have trouble with HUI which is why I was trying to stay in EUCON but I don’t know if there in anything in the $500ish range!

There was some good discussion about this recently at the UA forum including some useful information regarding the Artist and earlier Euphonix-branded MC units. If mods don't mind me outlinking, here's the topic:

That’s me haha! I just got access to this community this morning. I thought I would take what I learned from the UD community and get some opinions over here at the pro tools side! That thread was super helpful actually! It made me think twice about artist mi/control simply for the fact that used quality may not be the best, the connection ports needed, and discontinued support! It junk they could possibly be wonderful options but I was wondering if there was a more up to date option in the EUCON world under 1k but I do not think there is! My best option maybe to just wait and save up.

Thats me haha! I just got access to this community this morning! yesterday I posted over there to get some feedback and I thought I would take what I have learned over here to the Pro Tools community! it was very helpful. From what I gathered I concluded this: staying with EUCON might be for the best, Avid artist mix/control is great but it is not supported anymore, firmware should be updated as best as possible, needs etherent cables and port, being weary of gear thats 10 plus years old because of working conditions. I would love to just do an S1 or dock, but my price range right now is unfortunately under 1k and I am not sure if there is anything in the EUCON realm for that right now!

EUCON is 100x better than HUI. As you grow you will get frustrated if you have a HUI controller. An Artist Mix is your best bet. But first Download EUCON and install EuControl from the Avid Download center (v23.11) and then get Avid Control from an App Store....this is free and you can start to experience EUCON. https://avidtech.my.salesforce-sites...ontrol-Support

Thank you! I know some differences between the artist series mix vs artist control, you would recommend mix? I know one has a screen and 4 faders and one has 8!

Thank you! That’s very helpful. I noticed there’s an artist mix and an artist control out there, I know one has 8 faders and one has 4 with a bigger screen.
Is there a reason I should get one over there other? Any big foundational differences? You think I should go with the artist mix?

Thanks!

I wouldn't bother with an Artist Control. The touchscreens are not great and the little wheel isn't very useful.

Artist Mix plus a cheap tablet to run Avid Control would be the way to go. You don't get transport but again it's not great on the Artist Control anyway.
