Default Computer noise through 001!!! Please help...

Hi there

I have a hideous and unacceptable hissing and 'crunching' noise coming from my 001. I have looked up previous posts that say that it is because of the unbalanced (3-8) outputs... but that is definitley not the case here.

I have connected my 001 via a balanced 3m snake to my Tascam M3500 desk (tape ins=balanced)and channels 1&2 are the worst (because they are +4dBu vs. -10dBu for 3-8 I guess)NB - Digi don't make it very obvious that there are only x2 balanced outs do they? But I digress...

The noise relates to mouse movements, or possibly more specifically screen updates: When I hold down the button on the mouse the noise stops??? When I open windows and menus the noise gets worse. Mouse movement causes variations in the noise.

Possibly an important trouble shooting point is that PT doesn't have to be running (with Sound Manager>Output=internal) for the noise to be a problem. As long as I have a channel from the 001 open and the Mac on I can hear this NOISE.

Hear is my config:

G4-400UP/192
Slot1 -AGP Rage 128pro (stock standard)
Slot2 -PCI Rage Xclaim 3D+
Slot3 -Digi 001
Slot4 -Adaptec 2906 SCSI card (to sampler only)

OS 9.1, PT 5.1LE yada, yada, yada...

I know x2 monitor cards is not 'authorised' by Digi (and I will test this as a possible problem tonight by pulling the 3D+) but would love some feedback. Similar threads from the beggining of the year don't mention x2 monitor cards at all but the symptoms of their problems seem to match mine, however their solutions were using balanced cabling (which I already am, and not a particularly long run either.)

Thanking anyone who replies in advance.

Cheers Louis

Hi,

Try this: put your powered monitors (or power amp) on a different strip from the mac, and lift the ground on that strip. That fixed my mac/001/mouse noise problem.

I've had this problem also. Though I don't run dual mon's, the symptoms you describe are the same. It's got somthing to do with earthing on the G4. After hours of trial & error I 've solved the problem by plugging my power amp into a seperate A/C outlet from the G4 & the rest of my audio gear. I know it's breaking the 'rules' but it works for me.

Thanks - I'll give that a go. After working so long with two monitors I am very loath to let one go! Makes sense - I have recently shifted the setup and yes - everything is plugged in to the same outlet now...
