Default ASUS K8V SE Deluxe & SATA Problem...

I hope this is the correct place to post this.

I have been using an older computer I built from the recommendations I found here.
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe - Bios is 1007.003
AMD 3700
WD 80GB IDE
1 GB (forget the make)
XP - NO sp1 or sp2

I wanted a bigger HD so I bought a Seagate SATA2 250GB 16MB buffer and my problem is I can't figure out how to get the board to recognize the drive. I can feel the HD spinning in my hand when the computer is powered on. I have tried both the PRI and SEC sata slots, and a few different sata cables.

Where do I enable SATA in the BIOS? Once it is recognized will I have a problem with XP recognizing the drive with out any SP's?

Thanks for your help!

you should plug it into the sata 1 slot...right now you are plugging it into the raid.
you can check in the on board devices somewhere in the bios, just look around.

Is this a replacement for the system drive or an added secondary?

I'm guessing a secondary.
You will not see the drive in My Computer or Explorer until the drive has been formatted.
You need to do that in Disk Management.

Any available SATA slot will be fine. There's nothing wrong with using a RAID capable disk controller.
It's setting up a RAID array that is recommended against. You don't acomplish that by plugging in.

If it's the system drive, Primary would be best and the drive should be recognized in by the XP boot CD.

In either case, make sure the drive is jumperd correctly. Cable Select (out of the box) is usually the best choice.

I appreciate all the responses. Thanks

I should have been a little more clear. My goal was to get both drives going and then image (ghost) the IDE 80GB to the SATA 250GB and then reformat the 80 and put it in another computer.

Since my first post I have tried all the SATA slots and nothing but my IDE and CD/DVD shows up in the disk manager. The only option I see in the BIOS that says anything about SATA is "OnChip SATA Boot ROM" and I enabled that and it didn't make a difference. Seems to me this would be an easy fix and I'm just overlooking something really simple.

I built this computer and didn't mess with at all, just assembled the parts and it works really well and has no problems with PT. I find my Opty 165 and DFI board easier to work with.

On the Advanced tab in BIOS, is the Onboard Promise Controller enabled?

I have the same Motherboard and installed last year a Western Digital Sata Drive.
I had some trouble as well but there was a nice utility on the Western Digital Website that made installing the harddrive easy. I think every harddisk manufacturer has a utility like this, check there.
As far as I remembered I used the VIA Sata controller!

I will try enabling the onboard promise controller tonight. I also moved the jumper to what I thought I was limiting the drive to 1.5GB instead 3GB. This seems to be a common problem with this board from reading other sites I just haven't found the solution.

I have another identical drive as a secondary in my other computer (opty 165 and DFI board) and had 0 problems. This ASUS bios isn't as user friendly.

If the Onboard Promise Controller is not enabled in BIOS, XP wouldn't have installed the supporting SATA controller.
