Default 2 Dongles for Ethernet!?

There has to be a more elegant way to run the Carbon of a MacBookPro!? I was hoping my Thunderbolt Display with build in Ethernet would do the trick, but no go. It doesn't seem to recognize the Carbon. So now I am running Ethernet to Thunderbolt2 to Thunderbolt3 in to my MacBookPro. Are there any Thunderbolt 3 hubs with Ethernet that would work? or how about a single Thunderbolt3 to Ethernet dongle!?

There are a few on the AVB compatible TB3 --> Ethernet adapters on the market, but in testing we had issues with them all to some degree. The double Apple dongle, while inelegant, was the most stable.

Yeah I figured as much.

It's shown on the Carbon page.

Dongle one - USB-C/TB3 to TB2
Dongle two - TB2 to Gb Ethernet

Thank you . Most inelegant connection though… seems dodgy

Agreed.

It would be nice to know what else Avid has tested, so that we don't speculate as to what might work. For example, the Caldigit TS3 Plus doesn't support AVB through its Ethernet port (similar to the monitor Ethernet ports described above) but Caldigit have recently released a USB-C/TB3 to 10Gb adapter, which does support AVB.
https://www.caldigit.com/connect-10-g/
Setting aside the generally poor reports out on the 'net of connections dropping and similar reliability issues with this new adapter (very much in contrast to the TS3 Plus, which most people think is great), has Avid tested this one, or is it too new? It might be a great option, or it might be a disaster. We don't know without trying.

Humm ? Not clear exactly what are you saying or what you mean by "no go" ,,,, do you mean you tried to connect your Thunderbolt Display directly to one of the Carbon ethernet ports ?

But if you do want to use your TB Display as a second display It should work if you connect the TB Display to your Mac and Mac to Carbon ..... I run my old Cinema Display fine connected to my iMac

I am not using an Apple Display but a Samsung 4K Display with Thunderbolt 3.
From what I have seen is that most manufacturers of Thunderbolt 3 peripherals with Ethernet ports use the USBC protocol for Ethernet which doesn't support AVB.
I have gotten used to the double dongle lol

Sorry to be so dense but I still don't understand. The double dongle only has to do with going from Carbon to Macbook pro. But If your Macbook Pro has a second TB 3 port ?? Can't you connect the Samsung to the Mac via TB 3 and then have two displays , the Macbook and the Samsung ?
