For hdx you don't need thunderbolt.

Of course for HDX you dont need thunderbolt...

But consider, if you want use HDX, you need a gpu, which don´t use both PCIe Powerplugs (like the 5870 does)... The new revisions of HDX are shipped with an adapter and you need a Split cable to connect the GPU and the HDX card... You also can use the SATA Port to power the HDX Card. You need an Adapter SATA to 6 PIN. You have to break the adapter on one side to fit the combi Sata Ports of the Mac Pro...

Thanks so much for all of your thoughts and advice! I'm actually reconsidering Usung an Apollo and maybe going with the Audient id22 or RME Babyface Pro so I can get more bang for my buck with this system. I definitely can't afford a new Mac with the kind of power and specs I need. My mixing sessions are often very track count, virtual instrument and plugin heavy.

For what you were thinking about spending on that Mac Pro you could get a Mac Mini with 6-core i7 and 16gb of RAM (with Thunderbolt). I wonder if that would be sufficient? I do fine with 16gb, but I don't use a lot of VIs so don't know how RAM hungry your sessions get.

Hmmm. So would a new mini 6 core i7 with 16gb ram run faster or slower than The machine I'm looking at? If overall performance would be better on the older Mac, I would probably opt to sacrifice thunderbolt connectivity. I normally only record a track or two at a time and it seems the Audient and RME USB interfaces are pretty good latency-wise and have good pre's and converters.

Someone who uses a lot of VIs could probably chime in here... If they do gobble up lots of RAM, that would be a definite advantage of that Mac Pro.

And I imagine the overall performance of a 12-core Mac Pro would be way higher than the 6-core Mac Mini, even if the processor is much newer.

I was just thinking of options if you really wanted to stick with the Apollo.

Actually... it turned out there is a way to add Thunderbolt in a 2009/2010 Mac Pro! Some folks over on macrumors installed a Gigabyte Thunderbolt card in a Mac Pro 5,1 and actually got it working. It needs a dual-boot workaround to get it recognized by macOS, but looks very promising:

Here's another thread with a guy running a TB UAD Apollo on a Mac Pro 2009:

It is hard to monetize owner upgrades from off the shelf parts. Hence the trashcan, glued on and soldered on parts. Makes me sad.
