Default Stick with old, or try new?

I'm going to be recording Warren Vache and James Chickillo on Tuesday. It will be a live concert...I was wondering if i should stick with my standard setup of 2 mics on a stereo bar off the lip of the stage or if i should try individually miking the instruments. Something is telling me that the standard would be better, but since it's such a small ensemble (just those 2 players), it might be worth a change-up. All i have are 2 mxl 603's and an SM57. the concert will be in a magnificient sounding church which is now our concert hall here at school. thanks!!

Mark

Since all you ahve are 3 mics, unless you plan on renting or buying more, you don't have much choice.

If you did, why not do both, and have the best of both worlds.

Mark,

As this is a concert, is there sound reinforcement? If not, does Chickillo play acoustic or electric? I'd hope electric, against Vache's trumpet. If electric, how about a 57 on the guitar amp, a MXL on the trumpet (keep it a bit away please), and a MXL in the room? Any more Info? There are tips for stereo placement, depending on your situation.

Change is good

I decided to go with the old...2 mics on a stereo bar. I decided i wanted the sound of the room bc it is freakin gorgeous, and plus, Chirillo turned his amp all the way down a few times when Vache played with a harmon mute. it was seriously an amazing concert. extremely fun and intimate. some of the finest music i heard since the day before when i was at a Phil Woods little big band recording session. but i think Vache and Chirillo were a bit better.
