Lightbulb HEAT, NEVE 8048 Listening Challenge

Hello All,

We recently visited the world renown Village Studios in West Los Angeles and
had some fun comparing 96k PT Mixes with and without HEAT and Analog Summed mixes on a NEVE 8048 in Studio A. We've posted the dithered, 16 Bit mixes and you can take a listen and test your ears.

Check it out and then discuss, we want to hear what you think!

HEAT Listening Challenge

I'm sorry to ask Tom, but what happend to the bass sound on this mix? I almost can not hear it so basically all 3 mixes sound thin for me. The bass drum is there but where is the bass?

Did I do anything wrong?

Well, sorry again, but to compare this "thin" mixes when what we're looking for is the Neve tone (body) of the music is kind of strange. Lows and mid lows is what I want to hear! We need more bass!

Anyway,

thanks for the test.

I can hear the bass just fine... even at low levels.

What are you using for playback? Do you have any eq settings on?

Hey Dism, I do have a good set of monitors here. KRK V8 (old model) with a KRK S12 Sub. Everything calibrated. It's an old monitor setup I know but it works pretty nice. My pair of Barefoots is just ready, but not here yet! Looking foward to it!

Of course I can also hear the bass, but if I were mixing this song I would turn the bass up at least 3dBs... Am I crazy?

Anyway AVID, I don't want to mess this topic. I love Phoenix, I I do respect Dave a lot. I didn't try Heat yet cause I'm still on Leopard, and don't want to upgrade in the middle of projects. But I have the feeling it sounds great!

That challenge was hard...I got 20% right

The bass is just playing high notes most of the time...it's plenty loud.
But didn't care much for the mix in general.

On the other hand, I really love working with HEAT...the best thing to happen with PT mixing yet (along with Slate VCC).

I chose HEAT as my favorite sounding...so even in a blind test I'd prefer it apparently

I will agree that HEAT does sound pretty impressive. VCC is definitely doing the job for me, though. A nice reason not to hate RTAS too much.

Still curious to see how this will all play out in the next couple months. Keep it up, Avid!

I like the song too! I'm not sure if Sean has posted the full song on his website, but it's a great song (which you can't hear all of it, just 4 bar loops...)

Also - keep in mind that the mixes are not mastered.

Thanks!
