Do I need to go HD
Should I go HD
As of now I have a mix card and an Adat Bridge. I record through the A/D converters on my finalizer. I’m cutting rap and RnB projects where 64 trks are enough. I have almost all the plugins I want besides the sony. Do you guys recommend a change in front end and some farm cards, or scrapping the load and going HD? Also considering adding a 24bit sampler/drum machine (akai MPC 4000). What do u think? Also would a Fatso be a big jump in sound? (warmth)

Re: Do I need to go HD
The interfaces sound better and you get twice the processing power. You are able to record at a higher sampling rate. Do you need that? If you do, then you need HD. If not, stay where you are.

Re: Do I need to go HD
As i have said before, PLEASE SLOW DOWN. It has taken sometime to realize that it is not the gear but ME that makes the music. In your case you should really learn what you have before you jump ship to a new system... you just got it!!

Re: Do I need to go HD
also would it be wise to add one of the new interfaces (if they work as standalones). Assuming this would run through the legacy port to my adat bridge. or if that doesnt work via lightpipe. would this not give me a cheap highquality conversion, as well as a step toward PT HD if I decide to go there in the future?

Re: Do I need to go HD
I do mean to recall that the new interfaces are operational standalone .... and more and more "reliable" sources tell me that especially the 192 sounds fantastic .... can't wait to hear them myself ....
some of those sources I would blindly trust my wife with .... go figure ... LMAO

Re: Do I need to go HD
what if all your recordings are from synthesizers (hiphop, techno, house). will the HD interfaces make a difference compared to an 888/24 ???

Re: Do I need to go HD
In response To:
"what if all your recordings are from synthesizers (hiphop, techno, house). will the HD interfaces make a difference compared to an 888/24 ??? " Yes, it makes the world of difference. Remember an analog console has always been 24 bit 96khz ready. Just because I mainly use samplers and synths doesnt mean that a lower sampling rate bit depth etc will do the job. On the contrary, us electronic musicians need the same quality as the real instrument musicians. If you recorded an electonic masterpiece and wanted to take it to a studio to mix it, would you use the Studio with the Soundcraft Spirit, or the studio with the Neve console. To get the best mix from you synths and samplers you will choose the studio with the best gear (budget permitting) I would also like to add that because I rarely use real guitars, drums etc I dont get the warmth that a real instrument can add to a Pro tools recording. I find some of my mixes sterile, and have to sometimes crowbar things in there to get them to fit in the mix. I have seen this misconception quite a few times the DUC board that seems to imply that electronic music doesnt need to be 24 bit etc. I completely disagree with that and if the new HD system is going to help my somewhat sterile sounding recordings then I am well up for it. Re: Do I need to go HD
I agree with ejsongs. Unless you know of specific areas where your system needs improvement, then I would stick with what you have.
If you are making music and getting paid, then ask yourself what your return on investment in an HD system would bring. Can you charge more? Will your music be better with 128 tracks? Usually I've found that a) I can't charge enough more, and b) after a certain point, gear doesn't really make a difference. |

Re: Do I need to go HD
Uno1234, I couldn't agree with you more....except for one easily overlooked factor: At some point your digi gear is likely to become obsolete. Not because it can't produce good quality music, but simply because the vendors don't support it. Eventually, Digi and 3rd party plug manufacturers will stop supporting the older versions. Not to mention you'll need to keep your older mac to run it because of architecture changes. Now, I admit I'm talking about a ways down the road, but if you can trade up that older system for a good price now then it does end up being a good return on investment.
This is what I'm grappling with right now... |
