Just bought a Pro Tools 8.4 rig, Free Upgrade?

Hi all, I just bought a Pro Tools MBox 3 from my college and of course its running Pro Tools 8, just wondering if there is a time frame for a free update to 9. Probably not knowing AVID....

I also just bought a 003 on Tuesday, it is supposed to arrive today. From what I have read PT 9 is a "new" replacement for all PT software not an upgrade. So there will be no free upgrade options if you just bought a rig, but you can pay a "crossgrade" fee of $249 to get PT 9 software.

I will be returning my 003 rig since it is still in the box until I see what Avid will be shipping the 003's with in the coming months.

Yea, the downside is I have already opened mine and everything, but I got it at a VERY good price so I won't complain. I was certified on Pro Tools 8 so I guess I will just stick to that unless my college works something out to get us free to cheap updates. (and iLok keys)

the crossgrade fee is only $250 for LE users.

it is a new version, and 8.0.4 is the end of the line for LE, but it would be nice if they threw the people that bought the any of the new hardware a bone. I bought the new Mbox less than 30 days ago.

STILL - the way I see it, $250 isnt a bad deal to upgrade to 96 tracks, ADC, and open interface use.

Yeah I just edited my post to show the $249. They way I see it is the hardware used to come with something to edit with. Either they are going to drop the price of the hardware or include some kind of software to use with it. Maybe if they include PT9 they are thinking of raising the price. Not sure, but since the box is not open I really would like to know more before I open this thing up.

I won't spring for Pro Tools 9 just yet because I just dropped $250 on this MBox 3 (yea, only $250 for the new MBox through my college) So I am hoping they will come up with a software package for Pro Tools 9.

I was told there will be a free upgrade to 9 for any commercial LE hardware purchased until the end of the year. You should contact the dealership you bought your MBox from to see if you qualify. Or contact customer service after you have registered your product.

As of yet, AVID has not announced an educational program for 9, so LE systems bought as an edu. SKU may not have the same terms as the commercial SKU's.

if you watch the launch video, anyone who bought LE or MP after october 4th will get the upgrade for $99, it seems.

My rep where I bought the 003 rack just told me that there is no free (or reduced price IE $99 for hardware purchased after Oct4th) In addition they will be including the PT9 software in with hardware purchases in January however the will be raising the price by $300 for the hardware that includes the software.

That is just what they told me. May I please have the link to the launch video you are speaking of?
