2021.6 install on the same drive as 2020.9.1
Hi,
Pro Tools install question here: When i had my 5.1 Mac Pro, i would just used two system drive, one for the newest Pro Tools install and the other with my "old" trusty system, meaning i could go back anytime to my latest version of Pro Tools if needed. With my new Mac Pro (2019), i have only one system drive, so i am wondering how can i have a similar workflow with just one system drive? I've read that some people rename the oldest Pro tools version in order to have 2 versions running at the same time, but i cant find the thread. Is it possible? Is there any issues related to this method? I would like to try 2021.6 without overwriting my 2020.9 version. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!!! Thanks Luc |

Re: 2021.6 install on the same drive as 2020.9.1
Just rename the older version of the app file within the Applications folder, then install the new version. You will then have both installed. The driver and firmware updates are usually backward compatible. I often use PT Prefs app to make a back up of my old prefs files for the old version, in case something gets whacky. And, most importantly, I always make a bootable clone using Carbon Copy Cloner before installing the new version.

So it's easy like that? And both application will point to the plugin folder, pref folder, etc? Cheers Luc |

More like too lazy to clear out the ones I don't use any more.
But it is really nice to install new versions and be able to roll back if needed.

Have you jumped between versions much to verify?

But I actually haven't had many if any issues jumping back and forth between versions. Of course, there are certain version jumps where there can be certain incompatibilities, like a version where they re-wrote the Workspace Catalog databases, and once updated, they couldn't be reverted. But on first launch of the new version, PT threw up a warning and suggested backing up the old database in case the conversion to the new format got corrupted. I don't really use Workspace Catalogs, so it wasn't an issue for me.
