Default Engineers\' Rates

What is the average price that an engineer would charge to record and mix a session in a studio owned by the client? Using only the equipment provided by the client.

Seriously though, more details would be great.

What kind of facility does this perspective client have?

What kind of gear does this perspective client have?

What kind of job is it? Style? Length of project?

What's your travel time to their "studio"?

Have you allready commited to the job?

Why not do it at your place?

Sounds to me like you should charge an hourly rate, and maybe figure in travel time if that's significant.

I would charge hourly, or at least set a block rate with certain restrictions.
You wouldnt believe how slowwwwww people will move if you dont have a clock ticking. Not that there is anything wrong with taking your sweet time recording a project, but its easy for a band or an artist to take advantage of your generosity without even realizing it. Not that they would mean to do so, but it happens... in fact is happening to me right now. My only saving grace is that this is a friend, I like the music, and it is understood that the next project will have more rules to it.
My charge is $25/hour, and I will do block time, say three songs, one day for $200, but this is not static, and varies with the project.
have fun!
Kev

You guys are lucky you have your day-jobs. I'm often stuck with that chocolaty end of the stick that don't smell like chocolate! I've had to raise my rates to b/w 30 and 50 just to help weed out the stink. And in the meantime, my day job is engineering at a place where I only get 10. Sure, there are some great plusses to working there, but I'm in an angry mood, just like the skies above my apartment, and don't feel like thinking about them right now!
