Default Re: Cd Burning speeds

Putting together PT Mix Plus studio and I want to buy a pro audio cd-r. Was about to get the yamaha cd-r 1000 when I learned it's discontinued. I'm now looking at Tascam CD-RW 2000 but it doesn't seem to be up to the Yam's class.

Anyone have experience with either of these two babies?
Also: Do I mix down to DAT or directly to CD?

Thanks all for your input!

always burn to CD. Dats correct errors and cd replacates your mix perfect. The burner to buy is the Masterlink 24 bit burner, I also have the Fostex CDr 300, it works great as a stand alone. The Masterlink 9600 CDr from Allisis has become a standard at Mastering labs for 24 bit mixs but the converters aren't great. I use my apogee as the converters. Good luck, Sony just came out with a cdr also. FYI all the cdr are made by the same company in Japan anyway, HHB has a great one also.

Kurtstudio--So your saying that the standard is to burn at 24bit and leave the 16 bit conversion and the application of the dither to the Replicators??

I have read that the producer would want to control these things and Not leave it to the replicators??

Yes, I also suggest that you are there when the mastering is done. The all oarties are happy. The only minus is tha malstelink has low tollerence for Peak levels, a cd that plays fine on all players might distort or digi noise on the masterlink, the wprk around is to load the aong into the harddisk and it plays back fine. I've had someone tell me they could hear the difference between different media types. one being crisper that the other or warmer etc.
personally I don't see how it can be. it's one's and zeros. it's either a one or a zero and if it isn't it's an error.
If there's a high error rate then the error correction of cd player you're playing it back on kicks in and you get variations in sound.

I tend to dismiss people who say they can hear undefined quantities as "warmth", and "richness", fullness. I think a lot of it is imagined.
I had a guy who swore that his pressed cd sounded incredibly different to the CDR master I burnt for him. Not as rich warm and full etc. I couldn't hear any difference and I loaded it back into protools, flipped the phase on it and played it back against the original version and it cancelled out completely, silence, no sound, no difference between the duplicate file and my original.

OK--So how many BLER's are allowable on the Glass Master??

I Never heard of BLER free CD's--Have You??

What about this jitter thang?? huh??

So what about signal to noise ratio??

All CD's the same?? Can't hear the difference?? How long you been doin this??

how does sinal to noise ratio come into it with a direct digital transfer of information?

Isn't Signal to noise ratio to do with the analogue demain where you have machine noise to combat.

Yes bler and jitter are important factors.
I took the lid off my yamaha and pointed a big fan at it and it resulted in the best burns I've ever had.

yes some cds have more errors than others but I heard this in audible clicks, not change in tone.

Burning a cd is not the same process as dubbing a tape. There are a whole different bunch of factors to consider that produce different side effects, I don't think changing tone is one of them. If there is what you percieve as a change in tone it is perhaps actually something else, a mushing of the sound from error correction perhaps? (hey isn't that warmth)

And I've been doing "it" for many years and I've learnt to not waste good mixing time on hypotheticals. I want to see the test sheets and have good explaination. The mind can play tricks on you. i've seen that more than anything else in this business. Ever had the "more foldback, yes that's fine be for you've touched anything" scenario?

The local hi fi store told me some people were saying optical cables had different sounds. Well if they do then I'd like to know why. it's a one or a zero and it goes through the light pipe/ spidif to the amp. if it doesn't come out the same one or zero when it hits the amp then it's an error. That's all that's happening there. There is no other electronic processing going on, just transfer of data.

the main thing I'm concerned with in burning CDs is Clicks from errors. some media are terrible at this and others not. all work better with good cooling which I think sharpens the burn.
Thats all I know

Only the data is digital. Everything than handles it is analog.

Potentially all digital code can be decoded perfectly. In practice a lot of gear leaves a bit to be desired.
