Default 512k or 1gig of ram?

Hi there,

Is 1GIG of ram going to make much of a difference compared to 512K ram?

Thanks,
Greg

512 is enough for PT itself - but if you are inserting any samplers or softsynths, it may be necesssary for larger sampled instruments. I freeze when running Kontakt and a couple of large instruments - PT says I am running dangerously low on RAM. So, for 200$, I ordered the additional 512M

Yes, you are right. And ram is sooo cheap these days. On the last CD there was so much frustration with hickups, record dropouts .. argh.. my hair was falling out. I just don't want to do that anymore. (fortunately I still have some good hair left!).

Cliffy Boy ... can you tell me what you do? Are you 24bit 44.1 or do you use 24bit 96hz? If a project is 500meg in size @ 16bit / 44.1, do you have any idea what that same size project would be in 24bit 96hz? I'm starting to hate this topic. LOL But, our goal for this CD is a massive jump in production quality and so we are looking at all improvements in equipment from this point of view. Thanks, Greg.

Greg
I track at 24bit, 48k. 24 bit is infinitely better then 16 bit. My 16 bit tracks from a couple of years ago don't come close. I don't know if it is really woth it going from 44.1 to 48. Dither only applies to the bit rate and the SRC is very good with no audible artifacts apparently. Check out the Truth or myth thread Here .
As for file size,
16 bit at 44.1 is 5meg/minute per track.
16 bit @ 48 is 5.5 M
24 bit at 44.1 is 7.5M
24 bit at 48 is 8.2 M
16 bit at 88.2 is 10M
16 bit at 96 is 11 M
24 bit at 88.2 is 15M
24 bit at 96 is 16.4

Hope this helps.

Yes, the size chart definately helps alot. I read through the long 'Truth or Myth' thread. Gasp .. I am not sure if it helped me or made me more confused (ok, definately I'm more confused)! LOL Just think ... the beatles used an 8 track.
