Default Dual 2 GHz G5 Power PC vs. 2.66 GHz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo

It's been a while since I've been here...

I've been running PT 7.4 with a DIGI 002R on a Dual 2 GHz G5 Power PC tower with two internal hard drives and one external drive. I have the option of buying a new 2.66 GHz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo at a ridiculously low price. I'd need to sell my G% to cover some of the money.

How well does PT8 work with the iMac? Would it be a worthwhile bump up? Or, am I kind of going sideways, performance-wise?

Anyone using this iMac with PT and can comment?

Thanks for the help!

Move to the iMac, as PPC is at the end of support after 8.0.1.

Personally i'd stick with the PPC for the mo and jump to a Mac pro when possible. Internal sata drives are a godsend not to mention the expansion possibilities.

I've had a C2D iMac and now i'm back to a G5, i'd never go nack to an imac now.

Thanks for the answers.

Would your calculations change if the iMac was a really sweet price, there was no chance of a Mac Pro anytime soon, and the G5 was on 10.4?

my g5 didnt work very well graphically with pro tools 8 and presented issues like GUI lagg. I found the CPU usage very acceptable for the jump. I would dual boot tiger and leopard on the G5 and get a decent powermac graphics card "ebay" to run 8 on leopard.

Thanks for the answer.

In that case, it sounds like I'll need to buy Leopard and a new graphics card. Seems a shame to put more $$$ into a computer that won't be able to run any PT updates.

From my experience "brief atm" Tiger and 7.4 run great, they even run the pro-tools 8 plugin's "light on cpu". Atm my leopard experience seems abit strange using logic8 and protools8 seem fine in terms of performance but lag in the arrangment window which im putting down to GPU performance. If anyone could recommend a G5 grahpics card that runs 8 fine i would go out and buy one!

If you look at the sticky where digi wrote about future compatibility, they have said that they will offer support/compatibility for now. It was just posted.

BTW, that is at the top of the forum page. If you look at the original sticky, it said that powerpc's would no longer be supported. They have reversed that decision for now.

Computers are a big expense. If you have a cheap dual g5 in sight, they work great with a good amount of memory. If you already own one...it's a no brainer...keep it until it doesn't work anymore!
