Thunderbolt is great and if there is no thunderbolt then in wsome cases USB3 works also with external drives as long as the hard drive is fast and newer.

I'm not familiar with thunderbolt. Does it connect to FireWire drives or do you need a thunderbolt drive?

It is 2016, why do you want a hard drive? At least look at external SSDs like the Samsubg T3 SSD. Both thunderbolt and USB 3 interfaces are much faster than FireWire. If you need to transfer stuff off old FireWire drives you can get an Apple Thundernolt to FireWire adapter.

The internal PCIe SSD on current MacBook Pro is so fast, faster than just about any HDD or external SSD that you are likely better off just recording to that internal SSD, and having VI samples there as well if they will fit. Which is why it is usually worth paying the Apple tax and getting a MBP with the largest internal (currently 1TB) SSD. At least start by trying this and see if it works for you.

If you have not purchased a MBP already I would hold off and wait for the new ones coming, current models are embarrassingly showing their age, new models need to have Thunderbolt 3, and hopefully larger memory and SSD options.

Just so I know I'm getting this correctly: with the new MBPs we can recording directly onto the SSDs? Does the same hold for the MBAir?

I would not get a MacBook Air, the small screen size is a PITA and limited CPU, memory and SSD size compared to a MacBook Pro all make it much less attractive for running Pro Tools. But yes, if you have say a current MacBook Air it uses the same or close PCIe 3 X 4 lane SSD cards, so if you are stuck with one of those and have enough internal disk space give this a go. I would not buy any current MacBook Air, they may soon be discontinued. I would not buy *any* new Mac currently, not until Apple updates the whole product range with Thunderbolt 3 capability.

This applies to current/recent MacBook Pros and Airs only, older ones had slower PCIe SSDs and SATA SSD cards, which physically all look similar (Apple proprietary versions of NGFF/M.2 based cards) but are very different. I certainly would not recommend this on older SATA SSD card versions.

Thanks! I shall wait for the next generation of MBPs!
