Default Recording with Macbook Pro

Hi there

Bought the Macbook Pro Brand new at a knock down price but had to buy it there and then with no modifications.

So I need to buy myself a good HD with FW800 and one that spins at 7200 RPM.

Firstly any recommendations on a specific type/model.

Also should I connect my interface to the HD and the HD to my Macbook ?

Interface is a UA Apollo (dont have Thunderbolt card and wont be purchasing for the time being)

Also Im based in Ireland

Thanks for the help
Paraic

Hello,

The Glyph drives are good as you can't sue any Firewire drive as their are compatibility with the chipset on the hard drive.

I use the Glyph drive and it runs perfect. I tried Lacie but Pro Tools kept crashing when it was attatched due to the Firewire chipset it used.

Also, you should connect the audio interface into the harddrive then the harddrive to the computer.

Ditto(more below). Glyph are good but pricey. OWC are my choice for cost vs quality.

Re. the hookup, yes, placing the drive in between the computer and interface is preferred for this reason; if the interface loses connection(by accident or you shut it off) the drive might still be writing data(just because the session is closed, doesn't mean the drive is doing something). If the drive is at the end of the line and the interface loses power, the drive loses connection, and any data being written at that moment can become corrupted and useless. You CAN hook it all up this way and it will work, but you need to be more cautious. Best(in either case) to either eject the drive or do a shutdown of the computer(just to be certain no data is mid-stream)

+1 on the Glyph drives as well over here. The only downside I find is they are a little noisy. I personally haven't had luck daisy chaining my HD to Saffire Pro 40, but your Apollo may work.

I was forced to use t-bolt to fw-800 adapter for my HD. Hopefully your MBP has 8gb of ram...Good luck regardless.

At home I use G Drives and they are reliable, inexpensive and meet the qualifications for an external drive... I use drive arrays professionally

Glyph was industry standard but I have had older models (I dont buy them anymore) crap out more than any other drive I have used (I have 2 dozen Glyph drives that are bad in a closet waiting to be shredded)... the way I did it for years is to buy 2 Glyph drives and have one act as a clone (backup), saved my ass many times on some big projects.

Also something to consider SSD drives have been approved by Avid to use for for PT.

*Solid State Drives (SSDs) have been tested and are qualified for use with Pro Tools 10, either as system or audio drives.

I can recommend 7.200 RPM drives like Western Digital Black (not Green!!) or Seagate Barracudas. If you have the right tools I would suggest to buy enclosures from OWC, like the OWC Mercury Elite Pro. You will buy the drives separate from the enclosures.

Another option is Glyph, I have made good experiences with the Glyph GT 051 Tabletops with corresponding 1000 GB Keys, they are pricey though.

Get a data doubler kit from OWC.... take out the super-drive (you can place it in an external enclosure for the rare times you need CD/DVD drive).... then add another 500GB internal drive to record too.. superior to using an external drive. It will leave the firewire buss for the apollo. You can get an additional drive to back-up to.

Yes, in case he wants to mess with his warranty and is safe enough to do all this himself.
