Default PC and Mac - Long distance relationship?

Ok......so here's the problem. I have a session that is being sent to me from New York on a firewire HD. The problem is that the session was done on a Mac. Am I going to be able to just plug it in? Or is there more I should know? What should I tell them specifically so that the files will plug into my pc? Help!

Sincerely,
guitarBigsky

Have them use the File menu option Save Session Copy In... and to check the box for Mac/PC Compatibility. If this is a Mac formatted drive, you'll need to buy MacDrive5 from Media4.

Ok.....so if the drive is a mac formatted drive...and I get the macdrive5 program, it should recognize the drive and allow me to import the session into my pc, right? They don't have to do anything? Sorry if I sound completely ignorant....it's because I am and i want to make sure there are no mistakes.

Right.. If they save as I described. the file format will be either AIFF or WAV.. and if you have MacDrive5, you can copy the session from the Mac formatted drive to your PC's drive... I do this all the time.

For more involved info, check out the FAQ and this thread.

Dude, you rule. I feel at peace with the world. Thank you. Now I can't wait to get the drive.

"copy the session from the Mac formatted drive to your PC's drive"

When will this step become unneccesary?

MacOpener does not officially work with FireWire drives.... MacDrive5 is the only reliable cross platform FireWire solution.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I doubt it will.. as there is processor overhead in the translation... I personally don't find this an issue at all.

Buy a $50 dollar program called MacOpener from DataViz. It's digi-endorsed, they ship a demo with the 002. It works like a charm. I used to do all the enforcing and making sure everyone transferred everything in just the right way. Now all I have to do is tell them to make a backup before they send it in case something happens during shipping.
