Default Open .pts (Pro Tools 6.4.1) in Pro Tools 2018

Hi,

I'm about to do a major hardware/software upgrade to my recording rig, currently a Digi001 and Pro Tools 6.4.1. What can I expect to happen when I try to open (or import?) .pts files with Pro Tools 2018? For example, will my clips maintain their place on the timeline, will my mix automations be intact, my fades, tempos, gains, etc ...

Thanks,

Karma

You need to open in PT10 and save in .ptx format first

If your sessions have audio files that are SD2 (Sound Designer II) files, then be sure to convert all the sessions and audio files to WAV before moving to a newer Pro Tools or OS.

Thanks for the info but ... how do I open the 6.4.1 .pts files first in PT 10 when I want to go from 6.4.1 directly to PT 2018?

Yes, all of my years of sessions are wav files and pts sessions.

What I'm after is if the integrity of my sessions will be maintained;because if not and if its going to be a complete overhaul of my thousands of files its not worth it and I will just stay with my Digi001 and PT 6.4.1 ... Is there anybody with the expertise to address my stated concerns at the beginning of this thread?

Thanks again,
Karma

Out of curiosity I just opened several older .pts 6.9 sessions with no problem in 2018.7.

Are .pts 6.4.1 different?

If you have the old system and it works, don't get rid of it. Just keep it so that you always have the backup. And then experiment with what works as you transfer a session over and open it on the new system.

There will be conversions that you'll have to try, and a lot of plugins will not recall the settings from the old version. But there is no real way to keep things exactly as they were unless you keep that system.

Did you ever figure out how to convert your pts sessions into the newer versions of pro tools?

It's a crime that the older stuff gets left behind by pro tools.

As always, you cannot make an omelette without breaking eggs. PT6 is +20yr old already. Even 64bit PT (v11) is +10yr.

If you have a working older setup that can open these old sessions, open each session> consolidate all audio back to 00:00:000 and export these audio files for each song. Those can be imported into any DAW(including any newer version of PT) and edited and mixed without issue. Yes, the old sessions SHOULD open in newer PT, but you never know. Of course, if you are making a major upgrade, the sensible way to do it is to leave the old system untouched. Build your new system with current software and copy some sessions over to the new system so you can try and open them. If nothing works, refer to my initial suggestion(sometimes starting from scratch is the best way to go when revisiting old sessions)

Current PT can open them. There was a few years where it was a missing feature.
