Question What's wrong with this laptop? Sandra & Video Included!

My boy has this laptop trying to run an original Mbox with Pro Tools 8.0, and it will not launch. Just gives an access violation error. Using all stock plugins and no extra toolkits. Just raw PT 8.0. Here is the video that shows the problem and the error. He has Vista, but I don't see that he has any service packs installed. Could that be it? The setup works on his W7 desktop!

Lots of stuff wrong. Only 1 hard drive. Must be a minimum of 2 hard drives. That hard drive is only 5400 RPM. must be a minimum of 7200.

I dont see a graphics adapter listed, so its probably integrated, also not approved.

Also no service pack for Vista, you need at least SP1, and its better with SP2.

Download them manually from the Microsoft website. Install SP1 first, then SP2.

Turn off UAC. Do the other Vista optimizations.
Install PT with Run as Admin (right click the setup icon, choose run as admin) Always launch Pro Tools with Run As Admin.

I know about the hard drive. He has a separate one. We are just trying to get it to at least launch. Also, it's a laptop, so the graphics will naturally be integrated. Thanks man!

Not to nit pick, but there are many laptops with separate graphics processors.

Here is the quote from Digidesign:

Quote:
Pro Tools Windows Computers Require a Dedicated Graphics Controller.

Windows computers with integrated (i.e. northbridge-based) graphics controllers are not supported and may not perform well with Pro Tools. To achieve best results, the system must use a dedicated graphics controller.

For desktop computers this usually means a separate graphics card is installed. For laptop computers, this is usually an option offered at the time of purchase. Desktop computers that do not have a dedicated graphics controller installed will need to install either an AGP or PCIe based graphics controller. PCI or PCIx based graphics controllers are not supported.

Unfortunately, Windows desktop computers without either an available AGP graphics or PCIe graphics slot available, and Laptop computers without a built-in dedicated graphics controller cannot be upgraded to this functionality.
No harm, its a common belief that laptops only have integrated graphics, but its just not true.

Oh! Wow! I've only seen people use laptops with the built in graphics with Pro Tools. Thanks!

Its a common misconception. the graphics processor in a laptop resembles a CPU, not at all like the large card you put in a desktop.

Here is one you can see:

Out of curiosity, have you done the optimizations on the laptop. And have you turned off all powersaving stuff. I couldn't run PT on my Dell laptop (even just get it up and going) until I turned off the power saving stuff. My dell was set at 20% / 50% CPU from the factory. And it wouldn't even load up the program

Correct me if I am wrong but, original Mbox only works up to PT8.0.1 and Windows 7 wants 8.0.3(or 8.0.4)
