Default Blast from the past - help please!

Apologies that this seems to be my first post - It's been a couple years since I've used my old account and for the life of me can't remember what it is!

Thanks in advance for the information and help.

To delve into what I am doing, I am wanting to put together the top of the line System 7.1/Quadra 950/nubus/Vision/Pro Tools rig that would have been alive in around 1992/1993 (what I consider the birth of the modern DAW - people can refute me on this, but whatever), and try to record my next album on it. I have an able studio with current Digi TDM/HD hardware, as well as mix desk + outboard gear - it's not like I'm putting this together as a first audio system. That isn't meant to come across snobbish, just letting you know what's up and trying to get the point across! I know it's COMPLETELY backwards - I'm getting a lot of people in my personal life telling me I'm insane. It's a personal thing. I want to do it, and the challenge only entices me.

This is what I really need to know - what was the top of the line for late 92/ mid 93? Were they the 442's, or was there something more powerful then? TDM technology? Could you use 888 units (the 16bit ones)?

If someone could find a release list of Digidesign's products for back then I would be very grateful!

I definitely know what you mean.

The whole retro thing is fun and nostalgic.

But you might discover that your fond memories of gear used back then, and the reality of using them today won't match up.

In other words, within no time, you'll be screaming, "THIS THING IS TOO FREAKIN' SLOOOOOW!"

...but good luck anyway!

P.S. Half of my album was recorded on my old 9600/PT5.

....... but when I compared it to the stuff done in 7.4, I brought them all over into the new system!

Thanks so much, it's been a real eye opener so far. If I could get a list of Digi's hardware releases like that my questions would pretty much all be answered.

My first system was a Turtle Beach 56K system which ran under GEM... then I switched to the 4 channel version of SAW.. and bought a 442 system from a producer I worked with when he upgraded to Pro Tools 3 which we used to edit Meshel NDegeocello's "Peace Beyond Passion".

I don't think the 888s came out until 1996, as I remember doing my 1st post-sound stuff on a Centris 650 with PT 2 in '94, which was only a 4-voice system (and Opcode Vision, BTW) and being very jealous of the guys who got PT3 with an 888 & 16 voices in, maybe spring '96? The PT24 and 888/24 came out at AES in '97. That I'm sure of because I'd upgraded my system a week before the 24-bit systems came out- luckily Sweetwater let me do a return and upgrade to the 888-24.

Hope this helps, good luck!
