Our Q9550 rig at 3.4GHz with 8GB of Patriot Extreme RAM is still running huge sessions with tons of VIs and remains the most stable system we have. And that’s with 3 installed video cards.

Hi there hoping someone can help

i am currently using a 003 factory rack running version 8.04 Le software
on a desktop i had rebuilt last year with an Asus P5Q Pro M/B ,
Intel Q9550 cpu ,2 x 2gb - 1066 - KHX8500D2K2 Kingston HyperX ram and it runs windows XP sp3 which has been running fantastic

i am starting to get into simple post production type work and I want to upgrade to 64 bit windows 7 and protools 9 due to better obvious basic features and hope someone out there might be able to give me some advice as to what i need to do to my current desktop setup to make that happen obviously aside from getting the software

Any help appreciated

Add some RAM. Line up all the latest Win7 64 drivers and install Win7.

If your not sure consider buying a new disk and dual booting and saving your current disk as a backup.

+1. Very handy to be able to get back to your old system for various things. E.g., many companies haven't written drivers for Win7x64 yet. I have to boot into XP to print/scan with a Dell unit that's only 3 yrs old!

I have that exact system and it's fine with 4 GB RAM. The only reason you'd need more is if you want to run some big sample-based VIs. For simple post work, you should be fine.

I'm running basically the same system as you @3.4GHz with 8GB of RAM and a TI firewire controller with PT9.0.1-CPTK2 and w7/64 and all is well. I did however keep a drive with PT8.0.1 CS2. I haven't had to revert to it yet though. I also have an i7 computer waiting but haven't had enough reason to switch it out. Plus I'm lazy.

Thanks for the help peoples had been scouring the forums for 2 hours and decided i should just ask and save myself some square eyes the 64 bit stuff was still evolving when i rebuilt this computer , i thought i had set it up so it would be a pretty simple evolution when i was ready to do it, but so much changes in 6 months with these darn computers i wasn't sure and just needed some quick info to set me straight very happy i don't need to perform any major rebuilding again

Seems so simple get a new drive save the old one for safety,
great idea i will be doing that for certain!
also should have mentioned i planned to double my ram so that is def in the pipeline aswell

Cheers to all
