Default Help! Crunchy, Muffled, Tin can sound

Something is going wrong here. I have Pro Tools SE installed and use a M-Audio Fast Track for recording guitar tracks. At first the random crunchy muffled tin can sound only happened during playback, but now its happening during recording too.
I have replaced all cables with brand new cables, and new headphones.
I read through the forums trying to find answers...updated drivers...uninstalled/re-installed multiple times.
No Change. Still very random crunchy, muffled, tin can sound. I can kind of hear my track playing, but not well enough to edit.
Anyone had this problem?
