Pan Depth/Law questions
Is the Pan Depth setting in Pro Tools a global thing, or is it on a session by session basis?
I've wanted to experiment with this, but wouldn't want to memorize panning laws for every session I've ever done if I have to come back to it. |

Re: Pan Depth/Law questions
I would try them all and pick what sounds best to you(but I do believe its session by session, so use session templates that are set as desired, and/or stick a Post-It along one side of a monitor to remind you to choose the setting you want. Personally, I prefer the -4.5 option

Re: Pan Depth/Law questions
It's a setting *in* the Session Setup... so not following why you think it could be global. Play away...

Re: Pan Depth/Law questions
Thanks for the reply! Makes total sense and that's what I was thinking, but wanted to double check because I feel like I saw a handful of people on other forums referring to Pan Laws as "Global", similar to that of the "Preferences", even though it's in the "session Setup" area, so thought I would ask.

Re: Pan Depth/Law questions
Nice topic. Because I know nothing about it. I pan, that's it.
How would I perhaps benefit from playing around with it? Dave, what is good about -4.5 do you think? Mixing old stuff is mostly what I do these days, so this might be the time to learn about digital panning.

Re: Pan Depth/Law questions
I don’t understand what that article is trying to say.
Or, he’s just wrong. For example: if you have a signal in the left balanced correctly, and now you pan it into the centre, it will now be lower by the amount of the pan law setting. But you’re LISTENING to that and will adjust your balance accordingly. What pan law is attempting to do is to provide for the same apparent level as you MOVE a signal (via panning) through the center. If you have fixed stereo positioning pan law is essentially irrelevant. Here’s a better article https://www.fullcompass.com/gearcast...t-panning-laws

OK. Forget it.
I see this is going nowhere.
