Default PT 7.2 Digibase eating up RAM ?

I have been having problems when I install the 7.2 update. The software runs great but when I go to the workspace and start pulling sound fx from catalogs, my system slows down to a crawl (spinning wheel for 1-2 minutes). I am running 2 firewire drives with 250gb and 300gb of files. Up until V7.1, searching using the catalogs has worked great. After lots of troubleshooting I have found (by viewing free the RAM and VM paging in the Apple activity monitor) that Protools 7.2 digibase and catalogs files are loading into RAM and not releasing that memory even after you close the catalogs.

After booting PT 7.2 I have 868MB free of 1.5GB system RAM.
After opening a small session I have 798MB free.
After opening a 245MB catalog I have 283MB system RAM free.
After opening another catalog which is 140MB, I then have 17MB system RAM free.
After opening a third 345MB catalog, I still have 17mb free but VM starts to increase significantly.
Opening and closing catalogs or the workspace does not change free memory.

I haven't been able to find any mention of memory usage by digibase in any of the manuals or readme files. I'm trying to find out, Is my hypothesis correct, do I need to buy more RAM and if so how much to load 800MB of catalog files.

Thanks
Mark Petersen

Hi Mark,

In any case you should increase your RAM. I feel comfortable when running PT 7.2 with 2GB of RAM but what about any extra plug-ins or software you have going. Don't forget about your OS. If your on a Mac as I am I've noticed that 10.4.7 is a hungry beast.
I have 5 GB of RAM on my machine and it's well worth the investment.

All the best,

Mitch

In my experience, the more ram a system has the faster it is. I freelance all over LA and I can touch a PT rig and tell if it needs more ram. I feel like if your rig isn't in the 4.5 gigs + your going to feel it.
Peace,
Brandon
