Ineed to hop from

16 in (tracking)

to

8 in + 8 AES (overdubbing / the mix)

will I have to be yanking cards in and out?

I didn't see a price on the extra 192 A/D card. Did I miss it somewhere?

Jules, you don't have to yank cards in and out... the cool thing is that out of the 40-50 input/outputs connected to any given interface, you choose which i/o is active in software. So you can go into software and choose your analog inputs and outputs for tracking, and then without leaving your chair, you can then switch to your digital i/o for mixing... But... I heard today, that the switching does not have to be in stereo pairs. You can choose Analog 3 and TDIF 5, ADAT 1 and AES/EBU 8. It's totally customizable!

I spoke with Digi customer service today and the HD-192 analog expansion cards are
$1295 for the 8 A/D and $1195 for 8 channels of D/A. So at a "list price" of $3,995.00 + $2,940.00 for the additional 8 analog I/O it brings it up to... $6485 for 16 channel analog I/O.

Guys,

The 96io has:

8ch analog i/o on TRS
8ch ADAT lightpipe i/o
2ch of AES i/o
2ch SPDIF i/o
8ch of "legacy" input from an existing 888io24, et al.

The total number of channels that it can pass to the PT hardware simoultaneously is 16 in and 16 out. I'm not sure how much mixing and matching you can do of i/o. The 96io will not be expandable beyond this.

The 192io has:

8ch analog i/o on (2) 25 pin d-sub connectors
8ch ADAT lightpipe i/o
2ch of AES i/o
2ch SPDIF i/o
8ch of "legacy" input from an existing 888io24, et al.
BUT ALSO:
8 channels ADAT lightpipe i/o with a sample rate converter
8 channels AES i/o with a sample rate converter on a 25 pin d-sub
8 channels TDIF i/o with a sample rate converter

The total number of channels that it can pass to the PT hardware simoultaneously is 16 in and 16 out. Supposedly you can not only mix and match your i/o quite a bit, but the sample rate converters are for each (2) channels, so you can fly in, for example: 8 analog inputs, (2) 44.1k inputs on AES, (2) 96k inputs on AES, (2) 48k inputs on ADAT lighpipe, and (2) 44.1k inputs on TDIF. Note that the "legacy" port does not have an SRC. Also, the only way to get 96k data into the box at this point is to go into the AES inputs - according to tenuous information from Digi. I haven't gotten an answer yet on how one will get 192k into the box from an external converter.

The 192io will be expandable by adding ONE of the following cards:

8 channels of analog input on a 25 pin d-sub ($1295)
8 channels of analog output on a 25 pin d-sub ($1195)
8 channels of digital i/o ($995) which will contain ALL of the following:

8 channels ADAT lightpipe i/o with a sample rate converter
8 channels AES i/o with a sample rate converter on a 25 pin d-sub AND
8 channels TDIF i/o with a sample rate converter

I hope this helps.
Nika.

Wyn - 1 192 can not do 16 ch's of analog I/O, even with an expansion card (only 1 expansion slot, and only an option for an additional 8 ch's of analog input OR output with one of the 2 analog cards.) So, your $ figures are not accurate. To get 16 channels of analog input AND output, one will need 2 of the new interfaces. Sorry.

Officially, you CANNOT do 16 analog in and 16 analog at once with a single 192.

its funny, their lit says the 192 will do 16 simultaneous channel of I/O. BUT after numerous conflicting answers from Digi reps at NAMM, here's the official word. Forgive my redundancy if you've put this all together from various posts. Also, I'm not talking about Digital I/O, because I never use it.

A 192 comes stock with 8 analog in and 8 analog out. You can add 1 card (only) for either an additional 8 in OR 8 out. The 16 trim pots on both the built-in in and outs are for using either +4 or -10, not for 16 built in channels. So our dreams or 16 ins and outs at once are not happening, let alone any concept of more than 16 of either.

What I've gathered so far from reading the posts about the new interfaces is that you can only chain one legacy interface per HD interface. Is this correct ?!

In regards to my studio, were we usually have 4-5 interfaces hooked up for 32-40 ch of I/Os into the SSL. If we upgrade we'd need at least 2 HD interfaces (e.g. 192 + 96) to be able to keep, say 2x 888/24 interfaces and still have 32 ch's of I/O from the PT rig (albeit 44.1/48 KHz of course).

Or am I missing the point completely; would 1x 192 suffice and we could then chain the rest of our legacy interfaces to that single interface ?!

I know it's a dumb question but sometimes it helps to get a specific answer to a specific question.

Cheers,

ProToolsDude

C-Tone,

You're correct. It's a pity that Digidesign's configurator software doesn't have a more user friendly interface. They should have added another row where users could simply state how many inputs/outputs (analog, ADAT, AES) they would require, and how many simultaneously.

From what little I have gathered:

For 16 Simultaneous Analog Input/Output, you'll need:
2x 192 I/O

For 16 Simultaneous AES Input/Output, you'll need:
1x 192 I/O
1x Digital Card

For 16 Simultaneous ADAT Input/Output, you'll need:
1x 192 I/O
1x Digital Card (if u require RT sample conversion) - Otherwise 16 channels ADAT is available on the stock 192 I/O

For 32 Simultaneous AES Input/Output, you'll need:
2x 192 I/O
2x Digital Card

For 32 Simultaneous ADAT Input/Output, you'll need:
2x 192 I/O
2x Digital Card (if u require RT sample conversion) - Otherwise 32 channels ADAT is available on the the two 192 I/Os

Is that about right? Maybe someone from Digidesign would like to help out. Thanks.

Samhein
