Rock-Solid for Years...Now Crashes on Close
I've had a super stable system for a really long time, but just recently had my first bout of "everything is crashing what is going on". I was getting some nasty runtime system resource errors that seem like they have been resolved by trashing databases and preferences (never had to do that before in 10 years) - but I still have the issue that the system crashes upon close.
UPDATE: The runtime errors have started again (see attached images, usually referring to "insufficient system resources" - it makes me suspect RAM, but the strange thing is that most of the computer seems to work just fine. See attached screenshots, it often mentions GrooveIntlResource.dll, which is an MS Office file of all things - but sometimes it mentions other files as well, and that particular file has not changed in years, so it seems like it is still a PT issue. I'm worried because this was the first issue I had before the worse ones started, and I just want my stable system back. During the opening of sessions, plugins are being deactivated, and sometimes when I try to open new ones, it says it does not have resources. This is happening across seemingly any random plugins, Waves or stock. Sandra Report below!! Look familiar to anyone? Re: Rock-Solid for Years...Now Crashes on Close
Look near the top of this(and every) page for the link named Help Us Help You and have a good read. Then come back with a Sandra Lite report
Beyond that, consider these" 1-you are on a relatively ancient setup. 2-what might have changed recently? Any new software, hardware, plugin, etc? 3-is this computer ever connected to the internet? 4-if #3 is a "yes", then start by running MalewareBytes and any anti-virus(free stuff is fine, like Avast or AVG). Once things come back clean, you can remove these utilities. 5-Are all your sessions backed up(they need to be, and right now)? 6-Do you have any backup drive images of your C: drive(which should have been done many times over the past many years as its too late now for it to save your tail). 7-shut down the system, open the tower and reseat every card, connector and RAM stick. 8-if you have a spare PSU, I would try that as a weak PSU that under-powers the system can cause all manner of oddities or errors(grasping at straws here). 9-run CCleaner and clear out the Registry(run it repeatedly until it reports no problems).

To answer most of your questions, everything is backed up a million times, its not used for internet any more, and while it is old, the machine itself does not appear to have any issues and runs great. CCCleaner is not something I'm familiar with so I will check it out, looks legit and I suppose could help on an old machine. Will report back. |

Re: Rock-Solid for Years...Now Crashes on Close
**Always suspect plugins**
And in this case always suspect them even more: plugins get to run and do special stuff as Pro Tools closes. So you want to be especially careful that you are removing all plugin files from the plugin folder. Testing if that fixes things etc... all the usual plugin testing. It may not be the cause, but it's the place to start... along with excluding corrupted sessions. |

Re: Rock-Solid for Years...Now Crashes on Close
@Darryl Thanks, I've been lucky for many years and haven't had need for "all the usual plugin testing", could you clarify? I don't want to mess up my plugins. I do have the complete Waves 7, has always been totally stable. I was previously getting runtime errors upon opening any plugins, but trashing prefs seems to have resolved that.
The crash I'm experiencing only happens when closing PT, regardless of which sessions I was working on. |

Re: Rock-Solid for Years...Now Crashes on Close
Even if the machine doesn't connect to the internet, you can still get infected by someone bringing in a session on a portable drive(learned the hard way)

Re: Rock-Solid for Years...Now Crashes on Close
Windows 7? Do they even have OS & spyware updates for Win7 anymore? Have you run spyware? Delete Pro Tools prefs? Audio interface drivers up-to-date? Uninstall Pro Tools, CCleaner reg clean, reboot, re-install Pro Tools, AVID optimizations?

@EGS Yes, your questions are answered above - could you clarify "AVID optimizations"? Thanks!
