Default Do you consider yourself a \'gifted\' lyricist?...

Although I make part of my living as a lyricist in advertising, my strong suit is in music. That's where I'm confident and most comfortable. Good song lyrics do not come naturally for me, and I think that's true of many of us.
I'm curious as to how you feel about your ability to write lyrics.
Now, understand, that most of us can fill in verses, and do a fair job with it. But I guess I'm asking, do any of you feel that you have a 'gift' for writing lyrics? Please be as honest as you can, and thanks very much. Something good could come of this, whether it be with me, or someone else here.

~Roy

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Hey Robb,
Oh, I know, believe me... some stuff just doen't even call for lyrics of too much depth, and that's perfectly cool. As you say, to each his own... but of course, some songs do , and that's what I'm talkin bout...

graveleye,
Thanks... yes, I'de like a sample when you get a chance..... ~Roy

I really consider myself a lyrics arranger.
Not too long after starting recording(many, many, many moons ago) I met up with a pretty good songwriter, though his songs didn't seem to flow. I would take them, do a little shuffling and rewording.
We never even came close to being on the charts, but it worked for us.

8mmOD,
There's nothing wrong with the way you guys work. Listen to almost any Aerosmith song. How much time do you think they put into these lyrics?

Workin' like a dog for the boss man
Workin' for the company
I'm bettin' on the dice I'm tossin'
I'm gonna have a fantasy
But where am I gonna look
They tell me that love is blind
I really need a girl like an open book
To read between the lines

(Chorus)
Love In An Elevator
Livin' it up when I'm goin' down
Love In An Elevator
Lovin' it up till I hit the ground
Jackie's in the elevator
Lingerie second floor
She said 'can I see you later
And love you just a little more'
I kinda hope we get stuck
Nobody gets out alive
She said 'I'll show you how to fax
In the mailroom, honey
And have you home by five'
(Chorus)
In the air, in the air, honey one more time
Now it ain't fair
Love in an elevator
Lovin' it up when I'm goin' down
Love in an elevator
Goin' down
(Chorus)
Gonna be a penthouse pauper
Gonna be a millionare
I'm gonna be a real fast talker
And have me a love affair
Gotta get my timin' right
It's a test that I gotta pass
I'll chase you all the way to stairway, honey
Kiss your sassafrass
(Chorus)

Mitch

I myself think i am quite good in re-arranging voice-overs. To get them a little shorter, or to avoid certain words. The problem is that i can do that in Dutch...not in English....

I'm awesome at writing lyrics, I'm a regular bard, I really have my finger on society's psyhcic pulse. Here's an example:

ooo, ooo, ooooooo
I'm so blueeeee
You're really good and stuff.

thank you.

Here is a little tribute to my favorite hand cleaner. I am somewhat of a shadetree mechanic, love working on cars.
time - cars - dirty hands - time - work
whatever - i have to calm down before i destroy a computer tongiht. One day I wwill put this song up for folks to hear... its kinda the same rythm as lets say...steely dan - Show Biz Kids.

Gojo Your Soul

You know it’s somebody’s razor
and such a point to prove
that if you find out you are working for a jerk
then the slower it will move.

You got to Gojo your soul,
You got to primer your past…
And if you add a little water
Make it hotter
Then the longer it will last

Shower the hours
Gojo your soul
Steam-clean your dreams
Add a little wax to the facts
For the irridescent sheen

Get a bucket and a hose,
You got to take off your tee-shirt
And presuming you’ve been zooming down some dusty roads
You’re soul collects some dirt.

You know it’s somebody’s razor
and such a point to prove
that if you find out you are working for a jerk
then the slower it will move.
