2 things here. First, never jump unless 2 things are in place(1 being always do the COMBO updater, and the other being; ALWAYS have a backup plan). My backup plan is cloning my system drive(Carbon Copy cloner for Mac users is one choice). The other is to wait until you see the tech alert regarding testing and approval from Avid(having the backup plan allows you to be bold, but not shoot yourself in the foot). Using the cloned drive routine has saved my butt at least 4 times over the last 6 years of PT use(its amazing how an OS update or a PT update can mess with a rig).

I'm running 10.6.6 on a MacBook Pro i7 and PT 8.0.3 with no problems. However I use it for location recording and take it back home to my Mac Pro (10.6.x with 8.0.3) to do mixing and editing so I haven't tried plugins yet. But it can record 63 minutes straight with no trouble.

Hello,

Is the accepted practice with an iMac to use the stock hard drive for the ProTools application and an external HD for the media?

Is there a current favorite among external hard drives?

Thanks.

you are correct sir. pro tools will run off Macintosh HD. I have heard that Glyph and OWC make good ext. hard drives. make sure you find one with 7200rpm and firewire connector.
