Onyx preamps better than 002?

Save your money and invest in good pres is my thought.... advice.... however you want to take it.

Save up and get a API 4 channel, Vintech's or something in that realm and you will be much happier.

But Doc, what if you only have $1000 to spend on 8 pre's and not 30 like you?

I have been looking at the Onyx 800R, the features it has make it look killer. 8 pre's, analog in to AD so I could use with other preamp without buying an expensive Apogee, DB25 IO - will work with nice patchbays and HD interfaces, optical out, WC, MS processing, phase flip on every channel, impedence switching and 2-ch of DI. WOW sounds great on paper. But I still can find any real reviews on it.

True, he just asked if it would be an upgrade or downgrade. I personally do not like the Mackie stuff minus their monitors However I have not heard this one, so who knows. I just know that I am content with the outboard way that I went (thanks to you and others) and will support that as it is versatile and keeps the options open.

It is only 22 channels until the other 2 Vintech X73i's come in. Then I am done... maybe the UA 2-610 though instead of the X73i's Have a plan....

What I mean by this is how long did you use the DigiMax?

You used the DigiMax and eventually started your progression to better pieces, if he has a limited budget and needs to add 8 more channels then those are the constraints he has to deal with.
If he can get buy with just 2 channels or maybe 4 then he has better choices but what we tend to find is people looking to add 8 throught Lightpipe and still remain cost effective.

seeing that you've received no real yes or no to your question..I'd like to add yet another opinion;
I have my 002R at home for a year. I don't know what the mic preamps in it sound like, never used them.
However...just a couple of weeks ago I was hired to record a live performance. Last time I did that, I've rented 24 channels of Digimax LT. (optical into my Fostex D2424) On this occasion Digimaxes were not available, so I took what was left: M-audio and Onyx. I don't remember the model #, one rack space units with ADAT optical outs. The Onyx felt solid and sounded very good. The other one....let's not go there.
So..I think they are a good value and built well.
just my opinion...
