Default Macintosh HD is not an audio playback volume

This is the message displayed when I attempt to open a project file located on my internal hard drive. This only started happening after I moved my computer from one room in my house to another. I went into the Workspace window and tried to change the volume to record, but it would not let me. I received the message: "Macintosh HD cannot be designated as an Audio Record volume because it is not a valid audio volume."

Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

As you should know, you're not supposed to record to your internal hardrive in the first place. In any case go to disk utility under applications and "repair disk permissions". That may fix it. You can also dbl check the mac hd by highlighting it with the mouse and hit command + I to get Info and make sure "you as the user whatever your account is has permission to read and write to the volume. Done.

All of my permissions are in order, and I tried what you suggested, but I still couldn't make it work. It just won't let me change the drive to "R" in Column A of the workspace window.

You can do this as a test. Create a new user account and make sure it has administrator privileges. Open pro tools and see if the hardrive can be accessed as a "record" drive in that user account. If it can the permissions on your original user account are screwed up. That's why you need to "repair disk permissions" in your disk utility app. If it doesn't, download the latest combo download 10.6.2 and install it, reinstall PT and again fix disk permissions and try again. That should fix it. IT IS IMPORTANT TO DOWNLOAD THE COMBO UPDATE not standard updates and also uncheck to automatically update the mac OS. That's a no no with Pro Tools.

Well, I have tried everything suggested and still no luck. However, I did find out that my version of Pro Tools isn't compatible with my OS. Apparently, only version 8.03 is compatible.

Were you trying to run 8.0 on Snowleopard? You are correct. It's not compatible and anything below is the same. If you have 8.0 you can install and upgrade to 8.0.3 which is a free update on the web, infact DIGI might have a full installer now. This is assuming you're running Snowleopard.

Well, I was trying to run 7.1.1 on Snow Leopard. Ugh. I'll just have to pick up 8.0 and upgrade it. Thanks for the help.

sorry for first post being a novice moaning but:

I get this exact same alert/error. i am trying to launch m powered 7.4 (only just bought it).

I'm on OS10.4.11 with an M Audio 410 (current driver for tiger).

I repaired disc permissions with no result... any other ideas?

regards

patch

First thing that comes to mind is use an external FW drive. The internal system drive has too much overhead servicing the OS.
