Default My 001 finally died.. or maybe not

I have been happily using my 001 on a Mac G4 800, with external preamps and converters, for 5 years without a hitch. I rarely even check in here anymore because I'm so out of time.

Anyway, I went to turn on the system the other day, but the monitor would not get an image on it.

I checked the monitor, and it works with my other computer so it's not that.
The light also goes on on my 001 box, so that seems to be working.

The computer works, I hear the old familiar hum.

So my problem seems to be either the digi-001 card, or the Mac card, that the monitor plugs into.

i've never had anything go wrong before so I'm stumped as to how to proceed.

I need figure out which piece of equimpent is gone, so that I can replace it, if that's still possible.

Any ideas how to proceed?

Probably your video card. Your G4 800 has a 4X AGP slot and came with an ATI Radeon 7500 graphics card with 32 MB of DDR SDRAM. You can hunt around for a used one of those on ebay or what have you, or any other ATI or nVidia card that is 4x AGP, is Mac compatible and has the monitor connection type you need on it should work fine (there's probably some out there with 64mb or 128mb of video RAM available, which are fine as long as the other specs match).

thanks for the quick reply Slim.
I 'll try this, it might take me a few days to get it together and find one.
I hope that is the problem, if not, I'll be back.

Question; do the digi 001 cards ever go bad?
And if they do, is it still possible to stay with my 001, and pick up a used card?

I really can't afford, nor do I care, to upgrade in any way.

Its probably the video card. Sometimes simply re-seating the video card will fix things.

You can determine if its the 001 simply by pulling the 001 card and restarting the computer. If it restarts with Video its good chance its the 001 card. If putting the 001 card back in kills the video its almost certainly the 001 card.

I see 001 components being sold separately all the time on eBay.

Have you ever cleaned out your tower? Are the fans still running?

I think I would try giving it a good cleaning, check fans, and re-seat all the cards/RAM before just blindly buying new parts. No video is not always due to a bad card. Once you're sure everything is physically OK with your basic hardware you can then try an Open Firmware reset, and booting from a secondary system/optical disk to make sure it really is a card that is the issue.

Yes, that was it. I pulled the 001 card and it started and the picture came on, etc. Great advice..

I foolishly tried to open Pro Tools just to see what would happen and it said 'Unable to create a DAE deck.;

So I need to buy an 001 card, and you say I can buy one on e-bay?

What category would I look under?
Any further advice you can give me, thanks, rich

My advice? Try putting the card back in and make sure that its the actual problem

As far as eBay just punch "Digi" or "Digi 001" into the search box and then select "Musical Instruments" as the search catogory.

Do your self a favor though. try putting the card back in and make sure it is the problem before you spend your money.

You might also browse the "for sale" area here on the DUC

Some one might be selling exactly what you need.
