Default Comparing 12.4, 12.6.1 and 12.7.1 on Windows 10 X99 systems

Hi guys,

What are your findings when you compare these 3 versions? Especially Windows users? I tried 12.6.1 and went back to 12.4. 12.7 didn't work well for me. I also installed 12,7.1 for a mix, and it worked quite well. I went back to 12.4 when I read a post about the return of midi delay in 12.7.1. I didn't actually test that; there was no time to fumble around with bad midi. I had work to do, so I just went back to 12.4, which seems smooth enough, though I still get lots of CPU peaks, and many situations where PT halts on a white screen with a spinning ball. Does this also happen on the later versions?

Some people will swear that 12.7.1 is the best, but I know PT doesn't like midi and VI loads. It only works very well in purely audio situations, so it's all very subjective.

Has any serious midi / VI user tried 12.7.1 extensively? Has anyone had the time to compare these 3 versions? Any insight would be welcome. Thanks.

Different systems and different workflows dictate different results. There seems not to be a "one size fits" all answer on this subject.

Your'e right, Tom. That makes it very difficult. Maybe I should narrow it down to Windows 10 X99 users? But I should think midi and VI problems would be similar across a wider section?

After Tom's post, I edited the title to narrow things down a little. Another thing is that I'm more interested in production workflows with extensive MIDI and VI usage.

Anyone?

Mods

I think there may be an echo in here. I recently posted this...

There have been so many problematic releases lately that it might be useful to have a sticky specifically for vetting new releases (user-based beta testing) AND voting ?? on the best / least problematic current release.

Too many uninstalls lately. Let's see, 12.4 to 12.5, back to 12.4, then 12.5.1, back to 12.4, then 12.6, back to 12.4, then 12.6.1, then 12.7, back to 12.6.1, recent "noise blast" in 12.6.1, back to 12.4 ...

Or is there a least problematic release ? It appears that most of the Mods think that 12.4 is the most stable release. The Avid Rep suggested only updating versions if a specific feature you require has been added .

So, right now, for me, 12.4 on Win 10 seems to be the most stable, although I need to adjust the processor affinity to record at low buffer settings.

Hi ejinbc,

Thanks for your reply. I also use 12.4 with processor affinity adjustment. Do you get the white screen/spinning ball thing? I've had to reinstall PT a couple of times because of this. It seems very random to me, and all sorts of simple little things seem to cause it. I haven't been able to put a finger on it up till now.

Thanks mandal,

I checked it out on some purely audio work without any VI's, and it was
pretty smooth. My problem is midi!

Is there a verifiable many issue with 12. 7.1?

Or were they are just rumors that there was a midi issue with that release?

I'm curious myself because I'm thinking about jumping,

Whatever you do 12.7.1 IS stable and we can work on that version just as easy as on 12.4
