Time Machine Restore and Migration Assassin are known to be a huge problem for PT, just do a clean install and report back. Remember, you need to back up your stuff manually then copy it back manually. No automation.

Are they still? Years ago, yes, and I had run ins with both where certain files weren't placed in their proper destinations, but I've assumed (without a hint of evidence whatsoever) that they've fixed this by now.

They still are. It's not so much a matter of where certain files are placed but compatibility of plugins to the newer operating system.

Time Machine is crapola IMO. I’ve done nothing but clones via Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper over 15 years and 3 Macs and never had one issue. Time Machine is disabled on every one.

For *****s and grins when I got my 2012 cheesegrater I tried using both Time Machine and Migration Assassin to bring stuff over from my iMac - biggest waste of time. Too much frustration.

(there have been some past versions of Pro Tools where things did change but that hasn't happened in a long time)

Thanks BScout. I felt like such a newbie asking that question.

I’d recommend everyone who’s having issues with 2021.3/2021.3.1 just go back to 2020.12.1. It’s taken away the stress of my past 10 days. Rock solid.

I’m usually not an early-adopter. I let my guard down this time. Never again. Lesson (re)learned.

Time Machine has been great for file backup and revival (made a change to an important file today and wish you hadn't? Go find yesterday's version...), but, yeah, not for moving an old machine to a new one. We also use CCC for that (and all of our cloud backups).

Made a change to an important file today and wish I hadn’t? I go find yesterday’s version in the daily clone I made at the end of my workday last night.

Everyone’s workflow is different. I personally don’t like anything extra running in the background all the time, if it can be avoided. Time Machine is one of those extraneous programs, IMO. I also quit and run Bluetooth, Mail, Dropbox and Google Drive only as necessary, immediately delete Avid Link and Avid Cloud after PT updates, NEVER use iLok Cloud...I even disable Push/Fetch where I can.

Works for me. YMMV.

TM is great if you use it manually. F.ex let it backup during the night (manually, not sceduled) and manually restore the file you need

Well, FYI I use Time Machine only manually and I've done 5 migrations to new computers over the past years without any single problem, everything went perfectly.
