Gain riding plugin
Hello.
I mix at a spiritual center where in addition to our foh mix we also stream live to the internet. I use a pair of matrixes to send the FOH L/R mix plus audience mics to the streaming computer. However the levels vary widely and we do not employ qualified audio people to monitor and ride the levels to the stream. I'm curious how any other HOW mixers deal with this. I do not want to squash it to death when it gets loud. However there are soft parts to our program too and at times it gets too soft for our online listeners. Currently we are using MaxxVolume inserted on the matrixes with so-so results. Is anyone using a plug like Vocalrider for this (or maybe something else) in a similar situation and getting good results? Im not interested in theories, only actual results that are working. Thanks. |

Gain riding plugin
Fwiw, I helped a church setup a recording/streaming mix in a different DAW and one of the processors in the chain is a free VST from Breebaart called Broadcast. It's a 3-band limiter with AGC that worked surprisingly well. Unfortunately, I think the free version has been discontinued and replaced with a paid version. And of course it wasn't RTAS/AAX.

Re: Gain riding plugin
I see I was unclear on why I thought my post was relevant. The processing I set up was on the streaming computer. Signal from the console went to the streaming computer running Reaper and the streaming program. In Reaper we ran an EQ, broadband compressor, multiband comp w/AGC, and finally a wideband limiter. Recording was done in Reaper and the audio output was routed via Jack (or some other internal router) to the streaming software.
I have Waves' Vocal Rider and I think that this might be too momentary for the kind of broad leveling that you want to achieve.

Gain riding plugin
The key thing here probably being a high quality wideband compressor doing low ratio/low treshold leveling to gently squeeze the program dynamics to fit into the target delivery medium. As well as using a transparent limiter at the of the chain to put the final breaks on peaks.

Re: Gain riding plugin
I'm guessing that your music too loud comparing to speech?? (in the recording)
If that is the thing i would go for two stereo auxes or two stereo groups one for speech one for music with vocals. if you using auxes, I would go for post fader 0 db. Insert the maxx volume on speech bus and for the music bus i would go for a general compressor. buss pickoffs to matrix post feed. Make in the output matrix the music bus lower like 6db, or whatever to balance it with the speech bus. then on the output a Limeter to avoid clipping. If you are missing the reverb because now you only have a dry singal for the recording feed, you might want to send some of the reverb return channels to music bus as well. Or mix the wet reverb channels in the matrix mixer. |
