Default Destructive Punch audio drop outs help?

Hi guys,

I've noticed that when using destructive punch if you stop recording and then start again from where you left off (the playback cursor hasn't moved) there is audio drop out where the edit would be.

Is there a simple way around this? Or do I always have to roll back the cursor a little before I drop in again?

Thanks!

Elliott

You have to be playing and in punch for the punch to be clean. I've never heard ProTools start perfectly from a cold start. Besides, if you have any reverbs running, you'll get a sucking dropout on those too.

What you are probably seeing is the 10ms fade out and fade in. This is done to prevent pops and clicks when recording.

In the case you describe, it seems possible that you are getting a 20ms fade out then in as a part of your recording. If you zoom in to the same level you might even be able to see the fades (if you're recording a constant signal such as a sine wave).

Thanks everyone for your help. Unfortunately Pre and Post roll do not help because Pro Tools still drops into record at the same point, which seems to be a little late. You can indeed see the fade out/in quite clearly when you use something like tone.

Well thats fine I guess I will have to accept that. Does anyone know of a way to get Pro Tools to roll back the playback cursor so that it drops into record a little early automatically? That would solve this problem for me hugely, but I can't seem to find anything

Thanks again!

move your cursor back 5 seconds, set preroll to 4 seconds, hit record and off ya go. ...or am i missing something here.
If, for some reason you cannot go backwards during the record... just go back a few seconds and record on a new track. so it starts a couple seconds early and the do an edit, cross fade and consolidate later.

cheers

Hmmm.
My method is to be on Input, and to use a 2 sec pre- and 2 sec post-roll. I don't use the Auto Fade preference, and as long as I make sure my auto breakpoints haven't shifted over the selection I'm updating, I get a perfect punch everytime.

Having said all that, this is using Destructive Record, not Destructive Punch.

My 2¢ :)

+1 for Pre/Post roll. This always cures the hole problem for me. (no pun intended).

Thanks everyone, I'm going to have a further play around with pre/post roll and the autofade and report back.

Thanks again!
