Default Re: Current top of the line Windows Laptop for Protools

I decided to go with my original Lenovo P50 laptop.

I found a screaming deal on it and liked the form fact better than the Sager laptops, which also had some mixed reviews online.

For under $1,500, with free shipping; I got the i7-6820HQ CPU, 256GB SSD, 16GB of RAM, and the NVidia Quadro M2000M 4GB, with the touch screen, which I didn't really care about but I guess is neat anyway. But it has 4 USB 3.0 ports and a Thunderbolt 3 port. All of these option priced out on the Lenovo website to almost $2,000.

The Sagers that I was looking at were back ordered until the end of the month, and I didn't like their multi colored back lit keyboard. This Lenovo has just a white back light, which I prefer.

Should be here Monday.

Let us know how it goes as I'm sure others would be curious about a Windows laptop and Pro Tools.

The first thing I would check is the bios. Many mobile chipsets you cannot disable speed stepping and C states that can be a problem. I would also recommend downloading the system drivers and wipe the drive and do a clean install of windows. Windows 10, you can actually just boot into the special boot options and have it do a clean Win 10 install. I say this because there are going to be drivers installed that is going to kill your dpc latency. Be sure to test with LatencyMon.

I have a Dell xps 15 9550. It's a very fast laptop with TB3 and USB 3. Touchscreen 4k and it's very small. I have run 5.1 2 hour sessions on it with 150 tracks, avid hd native thunderbolt. Very nice system.

Gladded you piped in. I am looking around for another laptop for work purposes (need it more compact) but having it PT capable is nice. I knew you had got a Dell, but could not remember the model.

Fwiw I just found out about their precision 7510 laptops. Found a refurb one on eBay with an i7-6920hq processor, 16GB of RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, tb3, and USB 3.0. For less than $1200. Should give my 12-core Mac Pro a run for the money. I've been wanting something portable. But didn't want to give up too much power. Hope this fits the bill.

Will do. It's been a while since I set up windows for audio. So it might take a bit to get it running its best. And I may try hackintoshing it. I've done that a time or two. I'll def report back. Fwiw my MP scored just under 18k multi thread in GB4. Around 2500 single thread. The scores I've seen for the i7-6920hq are around 4000 and 14000. So it should be interesting.

I just got a tracking update. My laptop is in Tulsa, on the Truck for delivery...on Monday. I tried to get them to let me pick it up at the FedEx depot but it's a no go. Have to wait until Monday.

It'll take me a few weeks to get it all set up and tested, especially since I have to finish a symphony mix next week. Going to be hard to force myself to sit down and get some real work done rather than playing with my new computer.
