Default what is the real difference btwn 001 and 002?

i'm thinking now to transfer to PT002LE, because although my 001 has been great, there are no more updates and research done for it. trade-in seems to be best choice. what do you think? is the difference between them worth the $500? thanks!

the #1 difference is 002's ability to get mobile - with firewire connection it is easy to connect to a laptop. the 001 requires a desktop computer because it has the pci card. however, having the pci connection would at least in theory make things easier with firewire hard drives, because the audio interface eats pci bandwidth and the firewire hard drive is alone in the firewire bus.

no biggie, but 001 has 2 and 002 has 4 mic preamps. and the converters in 002 are better than in 001.

oh, and 001 is unsupported after protools 6.4 while 002 will continue to be supported at least until 7.something comes along, and with the future 003 hardware being about one year mature.

thanks so much. very informative, and quick. i got lost in the last sentence about firewire - too technical for an unfortunate such as i - but i got the jist. i am up to my head in confusion with decisions i have to make about what to do, and now really confused about 003 in the works! then again, there'll always be something NEWER than what you got. truth is i am ok with the 001, but there seem to be advantages to 002 (i knew about the firewire and the 4 mic-ins). anything else you can add? you seem to know very well what you're saying. thanks!

Just to correct, the software is PTle, not the hardware. There is no such thing as PT002le, there is the 002, which is the stand alone versionw ith the controller/mixer, and the 002R which is the rack mount version, no controller.

Both have 4 mic pres, much better quality than the 001, but no pads and very hot inputs, useless for high output mics or drums. The 002R has both phantom power and +4/=1- switching on the back, and being a rack mount unit, this is obviously a dumb design,m having to go to the back of your rack every time you need to change either of these.

The converters on the 002/002R are actually usable, a vast imporvement over the 001.

Many consider the switch to the 002R from the 001 to be a sidegrade, nto an upgrade.

You're still limited to 32 voiced tracks, a limitation given only by PT, other DAW softwares have much higher (typically at least double) abilities. Also, given Digi's hsitory, most likelyw tihin a year or 2 there will (like the 001) no longer be available software upgrade support, forcing the user to again shell out money for what will most likely be another sidegrade unit to remain contingient with the latest PT software, another restriction the other DAW manufacturers do not share.

thanks very much. i appreciate your sharing this info. i agree, it is real stupid to shell out money for a sidegrade. i'm getting a little less impressed with Mac and Digidesign, respectively, with every new bit of info i get. although i like my 001 very much, digi is a 'monopoly' and i don't like to support that kinda business! thanks again for the help.

The 002 and 002r also will run 96Khz sampling rate, if you need to.
