Default Simple Latency problem PLEASE HELP!

Ok, after 18 years of using Logic I decided to switch to Pro Tools. 3 days in and I'm just not sure if this is gonna work. I have a pretty big hurdle that can be fixed in Logic with a flick of a switch.

I have a session, there's a lot of latency. Partly caused by 6 plugs on the master output, and partly caused by a hardware insert going to an outboard stereo compressor with a long i/o buffer size.

I want to overdub a part. Tambourine.

I don't want to monitor through Pro Tools. I can't there would be too much latency, even a little is too much for me.

I want to monitor using the software that came with my Prism Lyra, that allows me to direct monitor, straight through the sound card.

In logic, when you do this, you have to untick the box in the preferences that says 'Software Monitoring'.

This means that when you record your part using direct monitoring, when you play it back, it sits on the time line in the correct place. If this is not turned on, It plays back in the wrong place, out of time.

I can't find the equivalent with Pro Tools. I've tried turning on Input only Monitoring, Low Latency Mode etc, and none of them work. The tambourine part always plays back out of time (and I played it in time

What do need to switch on to allow Pro Tools to calculate the right thing?

Many thanks!

Deactivate the Master Fader while you do the overdub? Nudge to the left an already recorded part (by the number of samples latency reported under the master fader)?

Try putting the plugs on an Aux ahead of the Master. Route everything to the Aux with the plugs (Sub-Master) and then Aux to the Master sans plugs. You should get proper delay compensation with this setup.

Ok thanks for that, it's done something.

What I'm really after I guess is the correct way to setup protools with direct sound card monitoring. Obviously this is used to get round the problem of latency completely - without having to worry about the compensation engine..

This is pretty standard procedure right? or is it all different with Pro Tools?

Thanks.

I have a MOTU interface and with that you can monitor with no latencey with their program called CueMix. Other interfaces should have features like that. What buffer setting are you working with?

Why would plug-ins on a master fader be the problem? Is it just another bug or is this by design? At home I track using hardware monitoring and almost always have a couple plug-ins running on a master fader, but fortunately have never had timing issues. Never any outboard gear on the master though, maybe that's why I haven't had issues?

Wondering if maybe the real problem is that the track needs shekere, not tambourine?

Plugs on a master fader is perfectly okay. Just bear in mind that they are post fader

I thought I remembered plugs on the master fader are not sync'd with DC in LLM - or something like that......
