Default DAE ERRORS

I searched the DUC for help before submitting my problem.
I recently condensed the old files on my recording drive, using disk cleanup, to make room for more, because it was down to 21% left. Bad Mistake! Next time I ran PTLE 7.3 on my Spectral RM7000 computer, the counter wouldn't budge from 1|01|01, and I got the error message that the DAE couldn't get audio from the hard drive fast enough, or the disk was too fragmented, or my Firewire drive was having problems from a CPU overload. I tried loading all sorts of files that worked before, for years. I also tried every different setting in Setup>DAE Engine, such as lowering the percentage, changing the level, selecting one and two processors, everything. Nothing helps.
The tiny System usage window, when displayed, shows a red bar coming from the right (for CPU), while a green bar comes from the left.

I spent all last night defragmenting my recording drive over six times, getting rid of all the red, defragmented files. There was a totally red display that is now blue, with no red, fragmented files.

But I still get the same result.
I tried fetching files from my other two backup hard drives, but get the same error message.

Has my computer swallowed its tongue and died?
Did my condensing of files on my recording drive cause a fatal error?
This is a high end system, with a Pentium 4 that has worked well for three years,
with upgrades through PTLE 6.7, 6.9, 7.0, and 7.3.
How can I get back to normal?

You should start with the steps in the Win XP/ Pro Tools 6.x/7.x General Troubleshooting thread and post specific info on your system per the info on that thread if you're unable to resolve the problem.

You may want to look at the Help us help you thread as well.

One other question - what are the error numbers in the messages you're getting?

Also - is it possible that your audio files are now compressed? If you look at them in the browser, do the names show up in blue?

The error message I am receiving is -9073, slow or fragmented drive.
And yes, all my audio files and sessions are now listed in blue.
For some reason, I thought defragging the drive would reverse the compression I had done.
Obviously, that is not the case.
What can un-compress the files on my drive?

Default Re: DAE ERRORS

Hi there; I get the same type of error (-9073), running the audio off a 2nd internal drive. When I hook up an external fire-wire drive and run off that the problem actually gets worse. I checked to see if my files are compressed and they are not. So I'm thinking it might be an fire-wire issue. According to the sandra report my fire-wire card is a:

FireWire/1394 Controller 1
Model : Hewlett-Packard Company R5C832 IEEE-1394 Controller
Version : 1.10
Interface : OHCI
Enhanced Support : Yes
Channels : 64
Speed : 400MHz

Computer is a HP dv9000 laptop. PT hardware is a 003. Full sandra report is posted here: http://duc.digidesign.com/showflat.p...=5&o=&fpart=42

I've gone through all the steps in the manual/onlie that I can find to optomise the computer. I also regularly delete the digidesign databse folders from all my harddrives, delete the DAE prefs, delete the digidesign folder in my Applications data, delete the volumes folder from my protools/database folder, and delete the prefetch file.

Any help is greatly appriciated.

Default Re: DAE ERRORS

Thanks.
That link to a previous post showed me how to use files that are compressed.
I found it to be so time consuming to uncheck every audio file and session in all my folders
that I resorted to copying the folders from my backup drive back to the recording drive,
overwriting the folder's contents.

That does not work, however.
The files show up as compressed on the recording drive, even they were not so on the backup drive.
I solved this by first deleting the folder on my recording drive and then copying the folder from
the backup drive. Now I can access the session and audio files from my recording drive without
getting that error message.

I still have a problem, though.
In my PTLE 7.3 program, the system usage window has three bars, or slots for bars,
that can show green from left to right: PCI, CPU, and DSK.
The problem is a RED BAR that emanates from the RIGHT in the CPU slot.
It was never there before.
I can right click it to make it go away, but it returns when I hit play.
What does that red bar indicate?
Surely something bad.
