If the System-5 MC could control PT nobody would buy the ICON.
Considering that the System 5 starts at around 250K usd I would be surprised if that would really be the case...

If digi was smart, they would make their controllers crossplatform compatible. They are after all a hardware company.

I was actually responding to Andrews' comment about the System 5 MC-

Obviously the feature set of the Applications Controller is quite different from the ICON...

sorry for the confusion though.

could be good for business but would probably require them to dumb down what the surfaces could and couldn't do or be criticized for not supporting other apps fully.

I see no reason to "dumb it down". It's a controller. It's a matter of software design. If Euphonix can implement control for Nuendo using a System 5, I see no reason to not be able to do the same thing with an Icon.

Default Pro Tools

The key to pro tools holding their position, is the closed loop system they create.

I for one would think it would be a bad business move if they opened stuff up too much. What you would find is customers buying just the bare minimum to be compatible with Pro Tools, and then buying everything else from the next guy.

Eventually it would come down to price, and eventually they would just keep losing sales. I think it would be the slow demise of TDM.

The point of the ICON is to sell TDM systems that back it. Nobody in their right mind would buy the ICON as a console alone....as a digital console.

Here's the deal:
Digi will license 'HUI Mode' to other manufacturers, but not anything further, and you can't blame them. Theoretically, a manufacturer (Euphonix, AMS/Neve, Etc.) could reverse engineer a D-Control profile, but you can bet that Digi would change the D-Control profile on the very next software revision. This of course would render all that hard work null and void.

Bottom Line:
For the forseeable future, if you wish to control PT automation from another control surface, you'll have to settle for 'HUI' Mode.

So, what you're saying is craete a system that has no competition.
That way there's no reason to improve, and it keeps prices artificially high.

Sorry.Makes no sense to me.

That is a little over the top IMHO. One can buy about 4 TDM systems for the price of one D-Control. The logic that ICONs purpose is to sell TDM systems dosen't add up. A company would go out of business with that size of a risk. ICON sells on it's own merits. I also believe that since ICON is selling on it's own merits, then it would sell to those who use other platforms as well.
