Cables for Internal SCSI
Thanks for the forum. It's very helpful!
I'm new to PT and the Mac and need a drive. I have a G3 300 (beige desktop) and want 10 to 20 Gigs + -. I believe the G3 has an internal SCSI buss. I thought it good to get an Ultra-Wide drive (like the ST39173) to accomodate future expansion. What kind of cable would I need to get to mount a Wide-SCSI drive internally. Thanks Again! |

Re: Cables for Internal SCSI
You may want to check if your computer has a SCSI bus at all. I think that the beige G3's started Apple's new convention of making ATA drives standard on all models - leaving SCSI as a build-to-order option at the Apple Store.
If you are very new to Mac, this may help. If you're beginning to find your way around already, don't be offended by this advice. In your Apple menu, choose Apple System Profiler. This application will show you all of your volumes and busses. Here you can tell if your computer was upgraded to a SCSI system. Here you should also see all of your PCI slots and their occupants. If you don't have a SCSI PCI card, I don't think you have SCSI drives. I'm writing this message on a Windows machine at work, so I don't have the application in front of me for reference. Also, your drives should appear in the System Profiler. Next to the drive name, the bus that each is on should appear. If this is unclear or didn't help, let me know. Re: Cables for Internal SCSI
The Beige G3s have a single SCSI bus that serves as both an internal and external bus. It only runs in slow-narrow mode (5MB/sec), so even though you can adapt a wide drive to the bus, your performance won't be that great.
The best way to adapt your wide drive(s) to a narrow internal bus is to purchase a 68 pin to 50 pin IDC adapter. Check Granite Digital. www.scsipro.com --Steve Rosenthal, Digidesign ETS
