Default Pro Tools | Control vs. Neyrinck V-control pro

I thought I'd share my test results from last night. Many of your probably read the mixed reviews from Pro Tools Expert. Here's what I experienced.

System:

MBP 2.6ghz 8gram 750G 7200rpm drive OSX 10.10.3 & *.4
Glyph GTP50 FW800 (audio)
iPad Mini iOS 8.3

Installation:

In both instances after downloading the Eucon 3.3 app from my account there is a strange error after install. The last screen would indicate that the install failed and you should contact the developer.

This seemed to not matter as Eucon would begin to run. Installation instructions are difficult to find, but the troubleshooting page helped out. Eucon wouldn't connect because in System Preferences you need to make sure you have the correct network adapter selected.

After all that, the explanation as to where you turn on Eucon in Pro Tools is vague, at best.

Compared to Neyrinck the set up is a bit more straight forward with no need to set up controller settings.

The app:

Right off the start, without needing to restart Pro Tools or the App the faders come up and are all locked in. My opinion, V-control is more visually appealing with Pro Tools Control being dark with wasted space and page.

To access inserts in PTC is not intuitive as it is in V-Control. One HUGE perk to V-control is the 'window' option where you're able to view your actual desktop. This comes in very handy and PTC is definitely missing this feature.

A feature I was really hoping to have is the ability to create Playlists from the control. Both apps lack this feature, as far as I can tell.

Operation:

PTC's meters are SUPER lagged and would often momentarily freeze. The meters lag slightly in V-Control, but nearly as bad as PTC.

The nail in the coffin for PTC, for me, was when after a few minutes at idle. The app began to constantly drop & reconnect.

Conclusion:

Although I have had my fair share of troubles with V-Control, since PT 12.1 it is been stable, connects consistently and never drops. At the end of the day, for FREE, the Pro Tools|Control is a neat tool that is still in its infancy. If you're 'seriously' looking to control your DAW with an iOS device then spending the money on Neyrinck V-Control is a better option.

I work for neither company, and this is my experience. Please share yours.

thx for the thorough review, you get what you pay for i guess .. but you spelled Toy wrong QUOTE: "neat tool" neat Toy sounds more like it .. and it is probably considered a new feature .. !!!!!

One can think if a free app is a justification for buying a brand new tablet, but I for one would have wanted to try this on my old one. That thing isn't going to be running iOS8 which means tough luck for me, until I give this trusty old one to my daughter and buy a new one for myself.

I know it's not on topic, but here's a funny iPad story. I recently purchased an Accel Core Card from Alto Music to replace one of my other Accel cards that went bad. The first card I received from Alto, the box is pretty heavily damaged, and there is a bent piece on the core card. So of course Alto, being Alto, they of course sent me a replacement card immediately, with the return shipment label inside the box.

So as I was getting ready to go to work, so I could carry the box and my iPad mini in my free hand, I put my iPad mini in the box on top of the padded Core Card that I was shipping back to Alto Music.

When I got to work and I taped up the box, forgetting to take my ipad out of the box, and drop it off at FedEx as where I work as we happen to have one there.

Later that night I was looking for my iPad, and realized I couldn't find it. So I used the find my iPhone app on my iPhone, then saw that my iPad mini was sitting somewhere in South Carolina. Quickly I realized that I forgot to take it out of the box.

I sent an email to Jon Haber at Alto Music, and he is shipping it back to me for free. I was an idiot, but Jon, as always is super great guy, and he's not even making pay to ship it back.

What's the moral of the story, I'm a complete idiot at times, and you can never go wrong doing business with Jon Haber and Alto Music!

For the life of me I can't imagine why avid thought it was a good idea to have this work only with ProTools 12 or higher. Knowing that there's so many other options out there, do they really think somebody's going to upgrade to ProTools 12 because of an iPad app? Really?

Default Pro Tools | Control vs. Neyrinck V-control pro

Someone posted something about the forth coming update for 11 being mentioned...(in some unknown capacity) in the release notes.

Soo it could be possible for them to include it in PT11 functionality, but who knows man.....

It honestly doesn't interest me at all, with the pro control or any decent sized CS - I don't see a use for it.....

It does work with Protools 11.

The ipad app requires Eucon 3.3.

Eucon 3.3 works on Protools 11.3.2+ and 12.

Its the usual usage of the word 'supported'.

Where do you get hung up? Did you open Eucon Preferences in System preferences and select 'Wifi'? Is Eucon turned on in PT's? Is the app open?
