Default Is this normal?

Hello everyone, i was a mac pt7 user for 2 years and i just built my quad pc and im starting to test it...now something started to happen that i dont know why, im runing pt le 7.0 via the digi002 (straight from mic to 002) now when recording an instrument via the mic if I clip while recording i can see the RED area of the PT meter as im clipping, but when playing it back the meter just stops at zero (Only green) and it does not show any clipping (no RED), can someone please guide me to why this is going on? is this a bug ? did I clip? thank you

The clip light is a warning that you have no headroom left but you still may have recorded an unclipped signal(although another db and it might have clipped the recording. My advice is to not record so hot. At 24bit(highly recommended) you can peak your input "meter" in the halfway to 3 quarters and maintain plenty of headroom without a sacrifice in quality or noise. Remember that digital is not like analog and you do not need(or want) to slam the input. In any case, I don't think anything is wrong here, just that you flirted with the ragged edge.

thank you for your fast reply, i was recording at 48/24 and to behonest with you i did have the signal hot, it just seemed something is wrong becuase out of the 30 seconds that i recorded the hand drum i must have seen it go to red 8 or 9 times, but not a single clip while playback, but i think your correct and i will flow that tip on only going to 1/2 or 3/4 of the way....another thing that has bothered me if you dont mind (i also posted this on the quad thread) is that for some reason PT wont let me record at 44.1 k (all other freq work) any time i want to record a track the -6084 error shows up (i need to have a lowe hw buffer) i lower it and still no result (i searched on here and google with no luck) any idea on this? thanks again!

That's an odd one. Try trashing your preferences folder.

I am not sure how many samples over creates a clip in PT, but when you record you will always see PRE FADER metering, when you listen back, you may have it set to POST FADER, check that. You may not hear it because it might only be 5 samples (wich you should still avoid at all costs) Remember that there is 48 000 samples being taken every second(at 48k)....... Turn down your input, and if you are still getting odd transients that peak, but the rest of your recorded sound is to quiet, use an outboard compressor to "even out" the dynamics, or work on recording technique. You may know all of this already, so sorry if it is too basic. It is the same on a mac though, so I would check your metering prefs first.
In your first post you stated that you are on PT 7.0, you should go to at least 7.1 CS8 with the quad. I run a very similar set up to Shans (he built mine) and am running PT 7.1 CS8 with no probs what so ever.
Hope this helps, and the first advice to record only about 3/4 of the meter are very good. You will rid yourself of that "digital is harsh" stigma quite fast.

I should also note that if you are set to PRE FADER metering you will never see an over unless one of your plugs clip...Just an extra thought
