The Digi001 & AM3 would be really great (not with PTF) but with PTLE and you'll have 24tracks.
If you're already spending money for working with PT try using the PTLE it's almost the same price and also you can get old AM3 for 150$ (Here) plus 100$ Digi software...
That's cheap... (Or a brand new ToolBox XP for 450$)

I just purchased an m-audio Audiophile 24/96 to use with different recording software. When I went back and tested PTFree with it I was shocked. I recorded/mixed/edited for about 8 hours without a hitch. No reboots, no lockups and no crackling audio. I recorded 2 tracks while playing back 3. I mixed 5 tracks with 4 different effects on various tracks with no problems. With PTFree being finicky I am not implying that it will work on every system but it sure looks promising.

Rock-Artist makes a good point. If you have resolved yourself to spending money on new hardware you might as well way your options. By buying an all-in-one solution you also will be entitled to support directly from Digi, (hardware and software) for what that's worth. If you decide to go the Tool-box/AM III way just understand that you are only getting 16 bit capabilities (18 on the card but 16 in the software).

Correction on AMIII info:
The software can be setup in for 24 bit depth samples. An 18 bit A/D conversion will write all 18 bits to the 24 bit sample the other 6 will remain empty or zeroed. The 24 bit files require about 50% more disk space and processing power (acording to the Digi manual). If your resources are limited (CPU and RAM) it may not be worth the performance hit if only 2 of the available 8 bits contain any useable data.

Personally, I only use analog inputs for audio data. If you use a digital input this does not apply.

I too have purchased the Audiophile 2496 after a few rave reviews, and now everything works great, this card sounds great, so now i use my sblive for soundfonts, you must check it out, most of the problems i was having with the sb live value have dissappeared not to mention the huge difference in sound quality.

Correction:
As a AM3 owner.
AM3/ToolboxXP: 2 Analog Channels (D/A 18bit) 2 Digital Channels 24Bit (No D/A resolution as it is SPDI/F)
= I can use 24bit though data is being captured in 24bit the Analog conversion is actually 18bit. (Yet it's enough)
2 Analog out/2 Digital Out.
Digi001: 8 Analog Channels (D/A 24bit), 8 ADAT I/F Channels & Additional SPDI/F 2 Channels.
(Also MIDI and Serial Ports on the Digi001 box)
8 Analog Outs, ADATs & SPDI/Fs.
Additional Featurs: Channel 1,2: PreAmped (Though people say it's not warm and always suggested to use external pre-amp.
