Default Re: Possible i5 Build for PT LE 8.0.1 / 003 Rack

Hey, have you had a chance to put that i5 rig together? What's it like? I'm interested in building a very similar rig based on either a i5 750 or an i7 860. I'm not sure that the higher price for the i7 is worth it or not.

I've already picked up a 500GB WD Caviar Black drive, and it's dynamite! I'm planning on going with a Gigabyte P55M-UD2 (or UD4) board for my build.

I had hoped to have a great review of this build by now - but alas and alack.

My IT guy had to send back a dead mobo to NewEgg, and forgot to pack something in - so the RMA was on held while he found said missing piece.

I am still waiting for the final piece (the sort of important motherboard) to get this thing flying.

Bad luck piled on bad luck - but fingers crossed (I'm an atheist, and by law, that's all I'm allowed to do in these situations).

Shoot, that's too bad. You'll get it all together eventually.

What made you choose to with the i5 750 over the i7 8x0? I'm still trying to decide weather the premium for the 860 is really worth it for the type of application it will be primarily used for. The biggest thing I can see is that the 860 has hyperthreading, but I'm not sure if it's really worth the extra $.

Thoughts?

You know, in the end - we went with the i7 920. I just got this on Wednesday, so we are tweaking the OS per Digidesign (and the RAM settings per Tom@Metro and albee) and then I'll run my first D-Verb test (I've never tried this before).

I opened up one session with a stripped down hardware profile, and what used to hit 47% on the CPU (RTAS) and 10% on the Disc usage, is now down to 5% on CPU and somewhere between 0-1% on Disc. So I'm getting there.
