Apple Power Mac G4 Quicksilver & MBox, MBox2, Digi
Hi how are you all doing? My name is Calvin Taylor a Pro Tools LE owner on a Dell with a MBox but for Christmas I might get the Apple G4 QuickSilver and The MBox2 and the Digi002 one or the two. I was just wondering. I will be ordering this off of Ebay here are his specs Product Family: PowerMac Memory (RAM): 768 MB
Processor Type: PowerPC G4 Hard Drive Capacity: 40 GB Processor Speed: 733 MHz Operating System: Mac OS 10.3, Panther Processor Configuration: Single Screen Size: None Condition: Used My question for you all is what would you do to upgrade this machine to get it working in damn near perfect shape. Memory, Motherboard, chipset, Graphics Driver, etc. Just help me out so I can know. Also will this machine behave with the MBox I currently have maybe the MBox2 I will own and the Digi002. Will I love the G4 or not. I would love to get a G5 but money won't permit so anyhelp would be appreciated. Thanks Basically what parts or upgrade do you think will make a Super G4. As I will probably upgrade one at a time

Re: Apple Power Mac G4 Quicksilver & MBox, MBox2, Digi
That's a pretty old machine, and the quicksilver model didn't have any L3 cache either which means it's not really a great performer to begin with. If you're paying more than a hundred or so for that machine, it's too much - you can get a brand new Mac Mini for a little bit more (less than the cost of upgrading a 733 for sure), which will smoke that 733. Also keep in mind that the G4/733 is not compatible with any relatively recent versions of ProTools, so unless you've got a copy of PTLE 6.1.2 laying around are are excited to downgrade your OS to 10.2.x, it's not a machine you should buy to run PT at this time.

Which G4 would you suggest then and if not I saw a Refurbished Mac Mini I can afford. How would that run with the MBox 2. Can you upgrade the Mac Mini like add memory

Re: Apple Power Mac G4 Quicksilver & MBox, MBox2, Digi
yes you can upgrade the mac mini
to 1gb of ram but you will need an external firewire drive working with the oxford 911 chip 7200rpm speed and 10ms average seeking time for it to work at its max trak count cause the macminis internal drive is an 5400 rpm unlees you change that drive to a 7200 rpm ive seen on the internet people doing this ill try to post some info on it |
