I am considering purchasing this mic. The primary use would be vocal, with possible acoustic guitar. Anyone have experience with this mic and care to share your thoughts? Any feedback is appreciated.
Oh....I am considering pairing this with either an Avalon 737 or a Millenia Media STT-1. Anyone with thoughts on this combo? [This message has been edited by Kamurah (edited January 13, 2001).] |

I was the first one too by it in my contry ( norway ) and I have got at lot of credits for my vokal and guitar sound . I am no using neumann U57 Tube mic . It's all great gear, and since you're buying it, I'm sure you know this but...
Tracking your acoustic can be finnicky, depending on the guitar itself and where you want to place it in the mix. Werre you planning to use this mic alone, or combing it with a small diaphragm condenser at the 14 fret or so? just beware of body "woof". Enjoy the nice stuff! Sincerely, Swami |

Well, I may share my experience: I also wanted to buy a very good mike a bought Neumann M 147. I tried it at home a was quite shocked by the unpleasant sharp sound (my great violin sounded like a metallic piece), I rushed to return it to the shop and change for classical U 87. It sounds very nice both for vocals and instruments. This tube stuff seems to me very strange. I have seen and heard another type of great mics, maybe even better then Neumann: Danish DPA mics - 4041 and 4011 (even Pavarotti is recording on them ...)

You may want to log onto Deja and do a search on rec.audio.pro. A lot of people find it too dark and boxy sounding and some prefer the much cheaper TLM-103 to the 147. It would be a shame to spend a LOT of cash on something you don't like just for the Neumann name. As an alternative, check out Soundelux . They always seem to get rave reviews.
Here is a good source of info too: http://www.3daudioinc.com/wwwboard/wwwboard.shtml They have a mic comparison CD available with good selection of Neumanns on it. |
