Display Module QuickJump
[DISPLAY MODULE QUICKJUMP]
Let's take a closer look at quickly changing the view presets and zoom settings for the waveforms on the Channel Display Modules. Simply hold Shift while pressing Zoom Vertical (located around the radius of the Jog Wheel) to show Display Module functions on the upper Master Module Soft Key panels. We're focusing on Channel displays this time, however the panel also has the ability to toggle settings for Master Meter and Post Display modules. Use the lower two switches below the Soft Key panel to quickly adjust the Zoom factor. Display Module QuickJump Jeff |

User Settings & Soft Keys
[USER SETTINGS & SOFT KEYS]
Two of the most important collections of user data on the S4 S6 surfaces are User Settings and Soft Keys. Especially if you work in a facility where multiple people are working on the same desk, it is essential to define, document, save, and easily recall your User Settings & Soft Keys. User Settings pull preferences from multiple locations on the desk: Settings > User Home > Local Options Tracks > Local Options Use the Factory, Load and Save buttons at the bottom of the Settings > User page to manage user-based preference files. Just like User Settings, Soft Keys can be modified, associated with users, documented and saved. As a simple way to start customizing Soft Keys, start by modifying the QuickJumps found on the Numeric locate section of the Automation Module. Assign the four quadrant pages (two each from both Master and Automation modules) you want to recall with each QuickJump. User Settings & Soft Keys Jeff |

Swap Layers
[SWAP LAYERS]
Let's take a closer look at Swap Layers on S4 and S6. Swap Layers expand the functionality of Track Layouts by providing up to 3 additional layers beneath each track contained within a Track Layout. For S4 systems, the global Swap switch (lower left section of the Master Module) can be used to roll through Layers A, B, C, and D. For S6 systems, adjacent to each Select switch is a dedicated and unique Swap switch which provides the ability to swap independently for each channel strip. We've started to assemble a jumping off point - containing our essential food groups - using Routing Folders and VCA Masters, and also providing quick access to effects returns for each of the primary food groups. Along the way, we've customized individual strips, their function, the process module, in addition to the particular preset for the display modules. Swap Layers Jeff |

Process Module Custom Maps + Att Knob Zones
[PROCESS MODULE CUSTOM MAPS + ATT KNOB ZONES]
Let's take a closer look at some less obvious ways to leverage Custom Knob Maps on S6. For this example, let's examine how to show a given plug-in's parameters using a horizontal Expand orientation with a Process Module. In order to accomplish this, we cannot have a standard channel bucket in line - which includes a Knob Module. So - the simple solution is to take advantage of Attention Knob Zones. The visible bucket on the S6 has been allocated as the 2nd out of 2 Attention Knob Zones. If we enable it using the Soft Keys > Extras, not only does it provide expanded control of EQ and Dynamics for the Attentioned track, but it also allows us to simultaneously access the expanded Process Module above for a different plug-in - in this case the Magic Death Eye. BtB: VCA Masters
[VCA MASTERS - Back to Basics]
Let's go back to the basics for a few refresher tips, and reorient with some essential functions including VCA Masters on the S4 and S6. The Type button located on the physical switches of the Master Module - above the Bank and Nudge switches, can be used without first choosing a Spill Zone location, to display a chosen type of tracks on all of your available faders. This can be handy to quickly see all of the VCA Masters contained within your session. If a chosen VCA is operated on -> by spilling manually or from Auto-Spill into a designated Spill Zone (L or R), that zone will activate and display the group members of the chosen VCA. With Auto-Spill enabled, use the Attention (triangle) switch from the strip to dive down into nested groups and the associated Menu switch to traverse back up the tree. To quickly return from a few layers down to the topmost level, simply hold Menu for a few seconds. If it makes sense for your workflow to populate the attention zones (EQ, Dyn, Attention fader, etc) on Solo, you can enable that option under Settings > User > Attention Track of Most Recently Selected Solo. BtB: Home Page
[HOME PAGE - Back to Basics]
The Home page on S4 S6 offers comprehensive control over every possible parameter for the Attentioned track. Central to this page is the Function Scroller - a color-coded train of blocks which can be swiped from right to left revealing everything from Input, Inserts, Dynamics, EQ, Sends, Pan, HEAT, Meter, to Fader, Group, and Bus. We'll explore the basics of working with and optimizing your stay while on the Home page. BtB Home Page Jeff |

Strategies for Custom Maps
[CUSTOM MAPS - Strategies]
Let's take a look at a few strategies for working with and managing custom maps for complex plug-ins. Ultimately, determine the particular section of the console (...from a Knob Module, Fader Module, Process Module, or Master Module) that you find to be the most efficient to operate for a given plug-in. Once you've chosen a module, create a custom map that makes sense to you, locating the key parameters within an easily accessible location on the module. If you are mapping to both Knob and Fader Modules, remember that only the plug-ins that you spend the time to create an Expand Fader Map for are going to populate when the Auto Expand Faders preference is enabled. Ultimately, this means that if you prefer to normally control processing tools from a Knob Module, but need the occasional Fader Map for noise reduction or multi-band plug-ins, simply create Fader Maps for the critical plug-ins and leave the others unmapped (to faders that is). The default behavior when accessing a plug-in will reveal the expanded Knob Module map, with the noise reduction plug-ins also revealing parameters mapped to faders. Strategies for Custom Maps Jeff |

Where is my Map Data?
[MAP DATA INSPECTION]
Let's take a quick look at one more topic discussing the XML map files which are created on the Master Module when creating maps for Sends, Pan, and various Plug-Ins (on Knobs, Faders...) As always, ensure that your Workstation under Settings > Workstations has a blue star associated next to if for the appropriate application, such as Pro Tools 21Mac. Under Settings > System > Auto-Load from Titles And Sessions > enable Auto-Load Custom Knob and Fader Maps from Sessions to restore the maps when the Pro Tools session loads. To purge out the contents of the Master Module map directory and favor only the map files being brought in from the Pro Tools session file, enable Clear Custom Knob Maps When Session Data Clears. This should be disabled on systems when you are providing common copied XML files for a given plug-in or function to be used on other system. Users creating new or template based sessions following this will automatically inherit all of the maps in the directory with saved sessions. Map Data Inspection Jeff |

Creative Control - Part A
[CREATIVE CONTROL]
Let’s take a look at using the console holistically to provide creative control of numerous parameters for the same audio source. We’ll examine how to simultaneously create paths to tweak Atmos Panning, custom joystick control for important parameters, Master Module parameter docking, then populating various plug-in and send parameters within multiple zones or buckets on the desk. As always, creating the structure within your session or template to efficiently move around between elements and food groups is key. For this particular session, we are leveraging VCA Masters - but we could just as easily use basic or routing folders to perform the same task. Here are a few more details contained within: Custom Joystick Mapping Docked Locked parameters on Master Module (with Pan plot) Atmos Panning for a mono Object Noise Reduction -> Expand Faders, multiple pages Pitch Shifting -> Knob Module, Expand Faders -> Docked Master Module Encoders Modulation -> Expand Faders -> Multiple Pages by parameter type Sends -> Expand Faders for Effects Sends 1-5 Split Buckets -> Expand Faders for Modulation in Left Zone and Pitch Shifting in Right Zone Sends on Master Module -> Locked then Send Effects (Slapper) in the Right Zone Creative Control - Part A Jeff |

One thing that might be interesting is going through the soft key default mappings (each of the shift-numbers) and talking about the use case/workflow envisioned for using each setup - like why they were created. Also the editing functionality from the desk (edit mode on process module) |
